Did I fail to mention that this is the only popular SEO blog I’ve ever seen that doesn’t ever have to moderate its comments?

I have to agree with your sentiments above. Although I am not a regular commentator here, I read your blog regularily, and have to say that in many threads, I have learned nearly as much from the comments section as I have from the posts themselves. That is quite an accomplishment, especially in as solid a blog as this.

I knocked on wood for you about the moderating comments comment Eli. But all said and done, the community here is something to smile about.

at first you’re right, the comments are pretty helpfull. but it is not really a optimal place to discus different aspects of a topic.

maybe you could also add a link to a topic in your forum. this way it would get more attention.

here are a lot of really clever and creative people. if everbody would be a regular poster in your forum .. that would be awsome .

i was actually thinking of getting rid of the forum completely. its pretty much useless at this point.

Any ideas for reformatting the comments so it’d be easier to discuss the post?
There are also comment rating scripts there, where users can rate comments and/or i can highlight certain comments.

I suggest a nested or threaded comments. You’ll have to make a change to your WP DB, but I think the results make the comment section very usable.

I didn’t even realize there was a forum… The problem with forums is separating the wheat from the chafe. As much as I have to give props to syndk8 for giving me a starting point, it gets tough wading through the muck to find useful content.

I like the idea of nested comments–kinda like shoemoney uses.

With regards to Inso’s suggestion above, there are WP plugins available which integrate WP with phpBB in such a way that the entire comment system is replaced by a phpBB thread.

Yea Eli I realllly enjoy the discussion’s we have here too - its nice that we can take different approaches to stuff and pick them apart from several different angles, heck look at the screensaver post - over 100 comments there with all of us talking about different methods etc. Keep on giving us good stuff to talk about bro! (and mabey someday I’ll get off my azz and submit something for the main blog instead of just a comment lolz)

The bullet that kills me is how Shoe showed him:

I think that plugins is a good ways to increase our blog visitor

This plugin is a great idea. I have gotten great commentors to my site because of this plugin. I do have nofollow links on my regular comments, but the top commentators section really gives people an incentive to comment.

I have seen that plugin use before. If you would consider posting some of your articles over at articlesender.com. I am sure our readers would find the useful.

The great thing is that you get great comments even without this plug in. Now it will inspire more people to comment and reward those who were doing such a great job before.

I’m a (reformed) lurker here. I love your posts, even though they hurt my brain sometimes. I usually have to read them one half at a time because of my terrible attention span. But most of all, I really like when you say “faggy”.

Wow, it is 2010 and the nofollow/dofollow debate still rages on. Glad to see that you are ‘not participating’ in the whole ‘nofollow’ madness. If you monitor your links, you can control where to follow or not. Also, google says that you should probably not ‘nofollow’ your own links either!

You have a great site Eli. In fact, when I was searching for an SEO blog to read, I found your blog in number spot of google today. I coming back back to read more of it.

It seems that $100 dollar a day article was more than just a linkbait article, it got you a huge flood of new readers too. I think it was around that time I noticed a huge jump in the number of commenters.

This blog has it’s fair share of spammers, but any do-follow blog does. Overall I would agree with you though that you have a lot of insightful people posting.

Top commentators plugin is a brilliant idea and a great plugin. I also use it on some of my blogs and it encourages people to comment on these blogs.

I’ve seen this top commentator box for some blogs. This is their way of giving credit to those who actively participate in their discussion, not just living links for their own benefit. It’s also a good way in building good relationship with the blog owner.
