Here is my list of directories I hand submit to when I have a new site. All 1410 of them
Big Directory List
I orginally got the list from someone at VirtualWebData.com
If you get a little bit of puke rolled up into the back of your throat when you first open the list, it’s normal. Don’t panic. From my experience just take a big drink of your favorite beer and a few deep breaths. You’ll be fine.
That’s a BIG list! But once you start looking through it, there are a lot of sites on there that aren’t global directories…
How many of the 1410 would an average site really need to be submitted to?
I never kept track. You are right though, there are many that your site won’t be able to submit to. If anyone ends up editing the list for global directories and/or generalized directories please send me the updated copy and I’ll post it.
WOW! Thanks for the directories list. The biggest one I had before was about 1/2 the size… I’ve found that directory submissions, though an incredible pain in the ass, are great for getting PR for your site, which may be meaningless but encourages other people to trade links with you.
I had a Brand Name Widget site showing #1 on Google — and the #2 position was taken by my BestoftheWeb directory page.
do you submit manually? or do you have the script to do the work for you?
If anyone would like to collaborate with fixing up this list, I am turning it into a google spreadsheet:

email me at:
justgold79 at gmail.com if you want to be added as an editor.
That such a nice list and the spreadsheet is awesome. I was wondering if anyone knew a site which for directory submission which used frames to load the directory, in the frame it showed the url, pagerank and free or not status. I forgot to bookmark it and cant find it now.
Here’s a little tool I built that should help you. It shows info like backlinks, pr, deeplink% and indexed pages (Y!) for each directory. If you register it will keep track of your submissions. When registering you get to enter your sites “keywords” in a box. by doing that it gives you a link to “Find My Category” which starts a google search for your keywords on the domain that you are checking for. This should give you a direct link to your particular subcategory.

All that being said, it’s much smarter to just automate the entire process yourself.
That sure was a big list yeah. I earlier used the list at vilesilencer, which has around 500 directories or so.
I use Arelis (http://www.axandra.com) to fill out the forms for me, and it works ok. Anyone got a better solution?
For the lazy webmaster, here’s a semi-automatic tool for submitting to directories :

Can anyone please recommend a service for hand-submitting directories ?
Very nice list of directories.
Just wanted to add to this - I found a website that lists over 1600 directories and a lot of them give out free deep links:

Eli - thanks so much for this blog and all the information that you share without having a “guru” attitude.

Wow how awesome is this site. In the few days since finding this place I have been filled with great information about how to better my SEO efforts. The lists here are great.
I have always used submitEaze for submitting to directories which is all good and well as it does all the form filling and you just have to choose directory and such. However after trying digixmas for about 10mins I realised I kinda wasted my money on submiteaze, digixmas does so much for you and even caches the submission processes of directories you havent gotten to yet.
SubmitEaze always took ages to render pages and such so i would waste a lot of time waiting for the pages to load, no danger of that for digixmas. Keep up the good work guys this site is freakin awesome.

That is a huge list! Like Stacy I have been using directory critic. Eli, there are some paid directories in there too. Do you submit to paid directories too?
Amazing!!! but several sites of that list we must to pay!
By the way, the comment above is from david deangelo… very interesting!
Here it is a list of free web directories. sorted almost descending of Google PR. I have a collection of arounf 2000 free web directories, all tested and working very well. will put all of them here as and when i will got time…

This list claims to have 17,000. Not sure how good they are; you can sort by PR though.

Oh nooooooo! Stay away from directories. lol
Just found another interesting list to add to this thread - it’s “2nd tier” search engines that mayhave limited crawling ability and so might not otherwise find your site:
http://www.trafficflowseo.com/2008/03/free-search-engine-submission-links.html
Now that’s a monster size list. If you actually hand submit a site to so many I’m sure you get fabulous results.
Thanks for the link Eli.
Must say you have a very, very good blog here.
Does anyone have up to date info on the directory submission thing? Is it still viable? Do you get any worthwhile traffic from the directories or is this technique for building PR only? Are some directories considered “bad neighborhoods”? Apparently Google looks for unnatural patterns of link development or something like that - but any ideas on how many links per day constitutes “under the radar”?
Questions, always questions…
:)
here’s another directory list: short and sweet: http://talk.iwebtool.com/thread23740.html
some directories are lousy and some are great. Just make sure the directory you submit to has a lot of its deep pages indexed. Otherwise your link might not be counted. Directories never send me traffic but they do give me an anchored link.
Thanks for the directory, If I have time I will checkall of them and update the list with working directories.
Of the first eight I’ve tried, only two are still accessible or free. Additionally, the spreadsheet is laden with random links so if you’re cutting and pasting URLs into your browser, you’re in for a long night of random popups.
…you might still consider it worth your time. There are a LOT of directory links in there.
This list is massive! There are lots and lots of places to check out and link up too. There are a couple that I have noticed that are a little out of date, but not a problem. Thanks for the upload!
Another priceless entry. Does anybody have a more sorted version of this excel file..
Another directory list is http://directoryrecap.com/.
Cheers.
Thanks
Awesome lists with everyone that has given input in the comments section. I already have a 1700 list of directories on my own, so… for sure with everyone’s list it should increase my own list by a ton!
I use Firefox with several plugins to help me, and it really makes the process of submitting to directory websites a breeze. The most difficult part I find is selecting the category for the websites. That’s the part that takes the most time for me. Otherwise.. I would go super fast threw the submission process.
I have noticed that nowadays… directory submissions only seem to effect my rankings in msn. I haven’t seen it have much of an effect on Google, but… it does seem to have a little bit on yahoo.
Till then,
Jean
Wow but there is too many lists out there, my head is spinning.
Thats a big directory list and you hand submit to each one? You diserve to be higher in SERPS
my submissions list feels obsolete compared to yours
I would have been really excited then, but even now I’m excited to receive this list. Thanks for sharing it.
