What is the point of multiple pings by others? Does it really matter if the pinged sites receive 1 or 100 pings? Does the site doing the pinging appear on some list of latest updates or higher up on a list of popular sites?

I also noticed that the iframe code sets the current page as the home page for Pingomatic rather than the true blog home page. Do you feel there’s value in this too?

Hi, I am trying to apply this hack, but in all the themes I have downloaded I cannot find this “”. Did this apply to wordpress 1.5 templates? It would be cool if you could point me in the right direction to getting this to work with the latest templates.

what is the difference between pinging from your server to pinging as user? Is there a Ip-Filter of the pinger, cause Domain and Server are still the same.

I looked in my Cutline Theme template and can find the line of code you referenced. I guess yoru post doesn’t apply to the last couple versions of WordPress??

I dont think this has much of a use now, or maybe only if your blog is updated very very often that it needs many pings.

Might be good if you have a large madlib site which does not have all it’s pages indexed in the serps. If a user browses to a page that isn’t indexed it will then be pinged bringing the spiders with it. I can see how this can work…Or maybe have the code on a forum so that new posts will get indexed quicker?

Wow, this is a really great idea. Pinging the sites multiple times from the IP is ignored, but if multiple people do it for the same site, I don’t think it could hurt.

Well, this should be a very good idea, but I think, if those pings are to much, what the servers will think? They could think it´s is SPAM?

I turned this into a WordPress plugin I called Ghost Pinger…you can get it free at ghostpinger.com.

Your competitor also appears to be running an affiliate program which is a nice way to collect on-topic inbounds (assuming the aff program uses clean links and doesn’t redirect thru a middleman like CJ). A side benefit of the affiliate program is that he can also explain away some potentially nefarious linking activity by blaming it on “rogue affiliates” (assuming he ever gets called out).
