How to make a $100 per day

Posted By Eli On November 18, 2006 @ 4:43 am In Neat Tricks and Hacks | 699 Comments

I just realized something! This entire blog is filled with ideas on how to help your sites make more money and receive more traffic, but I don’t have a single post that says, HEY! HERE IS HOW YOU MAKE MONEY. I want a post that tells you exactly how to reach your goals. A comment in another post (I do read them and get inspired by them) reminded me of this. So I perused through some old projects of mine and grabbed one thats very easy, very automated, reciprocal (consistantly makes money forever), and makes about a $100/day. Most of all it requires very minimal time and investment. So here ya go! Follow the instructions carefully and do as I did.

Here Is What You Do

1) Pick a generalized niche that is fairly popular. Celebrities work well, cars, animals. Anything will do.

2) Make a list of 300 items in that niche. For instance if you pick music artists make a list of the top 300 most popular music artists.

3) Download at least 20 public use(noncopyrighted) pictures of each item in your list.

4) Download or buy a screensaver maker. I don’t remember which one I use so I’ll have to update you in the comments when I get back to the office on Monday. Just make sure it is quick and easy to create the screensavers (saves you a lot of time) and comes with an exe output function that’ll easily install the screensavers on their computer without much dialog boxes or windows getting in thier way. This one looks decent. [1] Screen Saver Builder. It’s $20 with fully functioning 21 day trial.

5)
Create all your screensavers and put them up on a simple website. Give each screensaver its own page and download link. It also never hurts to SEO the site so it’ll do well in the search engines and make you even more money later on. Adsense also doesn’t hurt for a lil’ bit of extra cash.

6) Signup with [2] Zangocash (Aff Link). This step is optional. See the comments for more ideas on how to monenize your new screensavers.

7)
Talk to your account manager and ask him to bundle Zango software with your screensavers. Send him all the installers along with a textfile containing all the short descriptions and a sample picture. They are usually happy to do this for you. If they aren’t get a new account manager.

8)
Get yourself a copy of [3] Promosoft software submitter(nonAff link). I think it costs $95 for a copy but trust me it’s well worth it.

9) Follow the instructions on Promosoft to create the PAD files(product description files used for software sites) and submit each screensaver to hundreds of software and screensaver directories.

There you go. You will get paid $0.45 for every person who installs your screensaver. Once the screensavers are submitted you will have no problem getting tons of people downloading them everyday. If you get about 250 downloads per day(easy with 300 screensavers) you will easily make about a $100/day!

Okay so now all those people on forums and such who are bitching and moaning; saying stuff like “I want to quit my day job” and “I wish I could make a living online” can finally shut up. It is all right there, spelled out in plain english. You now have absolutely no excuses. Get off your ass and actually do it. Follow each step carefully and do a good job. It should take the average person no more than a couple days to get it done and you will make continuous money for a very long time. If you’re reading this and you suddenly realize that you are one of those people, just know that there is nothing wrong with that. We were all there. You just have to know when to quit. Quit searching forums for ideas. Quit buying ebooks hoping they’ll give that magical $100/day project idea. Quit asking “SEO experts” how they do it, and for God’s sake quit reading blogs hoping someone will post something like this, cus it just ain’t gonna happen(haha). All I expect from you is to read this post throughly and carefully at least two more times and actually follow through. There is nothing more I would love, than to hear someone tell me that an article I wrote helped them quit their job in the next 8 weeks. So make it happen!

Good Luck and Lets Get Back To Some SEO Shall We?

Update 3/20/07: The comments for this post are getting semi-ridiculous :) So a nice user has setup a forum especially for this post, where it can be discussed in a more efficient manner. Feel free to register.

Ok and for anyone who needs help obtaining 6000 pictures lol. Look for NeoDownloader 2.1! This program will scrape the images off a site in a few minutes. Its pretty intelligent too!

OMG, Eli, not this one. Not Zango, please. Zango is the absolute gutter of the internet.
So for everyone - should you follow this tip (from an otherwise interesting blog), be aware that you are spreading the spyware / parasiteware infestation, increasing the number of zombie computers, allowing someone to steal commissions from many affiliates - by bundling Zango with the screensavers, you make the internet a worse place.
Besides - you may earn measly one-time $0.45, Zango will however earn (steal, whatever) hundreds and thousands from one download.

Think about it.

Oh hell! I love this blog! Right now im thinking, why didnt I think of that? haha.

Thanks for the great tip!

For more on Zango… I mean 180 solutions affiliate hijacking, read [5] http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/180-affiliates/ that is a shame because this is such a good post.

All is not lost though - let’s see if anyone else can come up with a way to monetize this stream of content besides adsense. Surely there must be something good.

#9 Comment By Herb On November 18, 2006 @ 11:12 am

Sounds great, but then i saw the comments here about zango which makes me think not so great. Is there another pay per install program that is reputable?

#10 Comment By Eli On November 18, 2006 @ 11:26 am

before you attempt any pay per install program itz always a good idea to understand fully what you are distributing. From my experience Zango used to be an aggressive company. Since they’ve gotten their licensing they realy have toned it way down. They are definitely adware not spyware. They are very strict on the bundles to make sure that they aren’t tricking any users into installing. Their software has also become quite a bit less agressive. I hate spyware and adware as much as the next person but i have to defend them on certain unjust counts. they do not hijack your affiliates. That is highly against terms and unethical. If you suspect a company is hijacking your aff links be sure to test it. The guy who wrote that article is an idiot. Even valueclick said so. After that article was released Commission Junction changed the way certain cookies updated from banners and text links just to prevent people from confusing the cookie update with a hijacking.

Eitherway i was just using zango as an example. There are plenty of other ways to monotonize the install. If you really don’t want to distribute anything, you could always just change their homepage to include your google search link. :)

#12 Comment By wtf On November 18, 2006 @ 11:36 am

they DO highjack affiliates.

#13 Comment By bad-ass-bob On November 18, 2006 @ 2:06 pm

Cool idea for the newbs out there that includes me as I am new to this stuff, the aggressive stuff that is. It is said there are other ways to monetize this so can we discuss this? Find some new ways to make a buck from this so people who don’t like zango can use some other means? I like the search page idea so how can that be done? seems if you used a themed search/news/portal page along with a themed screen saver that could bring people in over the long term that would really rock as in continuous income stream instead of a one time install fee from scumbo/zango. any ideas on exactly how to accomplish this? Eli? anyone?

#14 Comment By Eli On November 18, 2006 @ 3:31 pm

Alrighty how about this idea. Watermark all your images with a second website url. The second website is nothing more than a PPC campaign to other screensaver terms. The second website gets advertised everytime the screensaver runs. Also, ppl will pay money to have you include their site in a bookmark on the users computers. There are tons of ways to monotize this. Infact it wouldn’t be a bad idea to do ALL of them. It doesn’t hurt to blend in immediate income with reoccuring income.

#15 Comment By Aur On November 18, 2006 @ 3:56 pm

First, once again Eli thanks for such a great article, and as long as you write great articles, I’ll bring in great comments :D

About the technique to “bundle an installer into your own software”, my feeling (and it just represents my feeling) is that if you spend hours writing a piece of software, maybe at the end, you might use this to get some cash, but just as a bonus for a software that you would have written for your pleasure.

Now, if it is only about making money, when it comes to spend time creating hundred of screensavers, it might not bring good cash compared to the time spent. BUT THAT IS ONLY MY FEELING, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ANY FEEDBACK from anyone who’ll try Eli’s technique.

Ok, so here an another alternative to Zango…
say you make a screensaver for that fancy singer, just create a dull webpage about the guy, with some ads on it.
e.g. your page would be called
[6] http://www.mybluehat.com/bonjovi.html

WHat next? You create the screensaver installer with the screensaver maker software, called in this example : bonjovi-screensaver.exe

you rename this file into something like
bonjovi-screensaver.ex_

Then, you create a good old .bat file, containing the following lines:

rename bonjovi-screensaver.ex_ bonjovi-screensaver.exe
explorer “http://www.mybluehat.com/bonjovi.html”
bonjovi-screensaver.exe

And finally, you right-click on your .bat file and “create a shortcut”. Finally, you rename your shortcut “Setup.exe”

And you just need to zip the three files : your shortcut, the .bat and the screensaver.

You distribute it, just as Eli explained.
When somebody will get the screensaver, he will of course click on the “Setup.exe” link that will execute the .bat
the .bat will open a window to your internet page before launching the setup of the screensaver
Then, most people will close this internet page, but some will actually have a look at it and click on some of your ads, bringing you some money.

What will bring more cash ? the cents from Zango when the user accepts to install it, or some cents from adwords when someone clicks on your links? I couldn’t tell you, so it’s up to you to test it and discover!

And remember what Eli says “this blog focus on creativity”! What I wrote is just a base, I tried to make it as easy as I could, but you can obviously improve this and use something else than a damn .bat file!

#16 Comment By Eli On November 18, 2006 @ 4:06 pm

There we go. Now we’re starting to get some good ideas. This kind of brainstorming is what i like to see.

How about this idea for those who want to remain aggressive but don’t want to piss anyone off. Make your own version of Google Desktop Search. Put a little bar in their taskbar that searches google and have it use your pubid. Just be sure to include it in your installers TOS if your going to do this. That way you’ll be in the clear.

This I’ve never tried, but i’m very tempted to :)

Great Monetization Idea, If you Don’t Mind Being a Little Dirty

Bluehat SEO has a great idea up on how to make $100 per day. He proposes creating some free screensavers and packaging them with the software from ZangoCash. Zango pays $0.45 per user download, so this could add up pretty quickly. The post very clearly…

#18 Comment By J-Man On November 18, 2006 @ 8:14 pm

Everyone is prattling on about zango’s practices and policies etc. I would suggest they read their practices page [7] http://www.zango.com/Destination/Corporate/BestPractices.aspx I personally am going to try this Eli, I am not using screensavers though I am using financial how to lists i.e. get startup moneys etc. Think Matthew Lesko… Thus far making landing pages with these lists has done really well, and people rave about the content. I am going to package it in a flash-pdf and export it to exe and run it through zango, I will let you know how well it works. Great idea man, and frankly Im a little pissed I didn’t think of it on my own. Keep posting, and maybe we can make a difference for a few.

Best Regards,

I don’t really want to get in on the whole zango debate. Just thought I’d mention that I’ve had some success using Screensavers.com’s affiliate system to monetize screensavers. Mixing in a good many free ones with some CPA screensavers seems to work well.

Your idea is OK but lame.

How are people going to find our sreensaver site? And how are you doing to get 250 doanloads in a single day and repeat it month after month? You mention a $95 program, but lol thats a rip.

Doesn’t seem possible when the niche is already way oversaturated. Celebrity wallpapers? What are gonna think of next? Rap music ringtones? Or Free Ipod razers?

I know you put time and fort into your post, but it isnt a great idea. Infact, it kinda sucks to be honest.

I give it as Ebert would say 2 thumbs down.

Great post Eli!!

Where can I find those hundreds of directories you mentioned?

Any suggestions regarding bundling Screensavers.com within your system? They have a much higher pay out per lead (CPA)!

Thanks a lot!

#25 Comment By Eli On November 19, 2006 @ 12:53 pm

Hey joe and michael,
If you’ve never given software submitting i strongly recommend you give it a shot. If youc can’t afford the $95 for promosoft you could always do them the semi automated way for free. I recommend using robosoft [8] http://robosoft.rudenko.com/.
its semi automated and has tons of sites but it sucks big time when your submitting 300+ pieces of software(screensavers). To answer your question joe, you will get the traffic to both the downloads and the pages by submitting to the software and screensaver directories. I have software sites that get over 7k visitors/day from simply submitting to software sites. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself.

#26 Comment By Wetc On November 19, 2006 @ 2:07 pm

how long does it typically take to create a screensaver?

#27 Comment By Monty Loree - AdMan On November 19, 2006 @ 3:50 pm

How do you these screen savers to hundreds of directories? That seems to be the bulk of the work.

#28 Comment By bradlee On November 19, 2006 @ 5:59 pm

The Zango part is a moot point! Don’t use it if your not comfortable. There are lots of cost per action offers you can throw in front of those downloaders. Some short surveys pay 1-5 dollars each. You can use any way you monetize other traffic. Just DO IT! If one way doesn’t work, switch to another. C’mon.

#29 Comment By roy On November 19, 2006 @ 6:05 pm

Just stick a disclaimer on your site - e.g. if you think you own copyright to any of the images on here please contact us and we will take them down immediately.

Gives you a little breathing space in the unlikley event someone contacts you.

#40 Comment By Matt L On November 20, 2006 @ 1:15 pm

The Zango part is a moot point!

Maybe a point that was beat to death, but certainly not moot. For all the talk saying that they don’t swipe aff commissions, I haven’t seen any proof that they DON’T. I have however, seen at least antecdotal evidence that they DO. Besides that article in comment #4, check out

their recent settlement for $3 million
[18] http://blogs.zdnet.com/Spyware/?p=861

more discussion at - [19] http://blogs.zdnet.com/Spyware/?p=856

[20] http://www.haloscan.com/comments/paperghost/116068614159181859/

I would suggest they read their practices page

All that said was that they tell people they are downloading spyware/adware… big deal. The person downloading the screensavers doesn’t care that their cookies may be overwritten or that someone is losing affiliate cash. My wife still doesn’t really know what I’m talking about w/ all this Internet marketing stuff and she hears it all the time.

My point is that since we’re all promoting aff programs, why distribute a product where there is any evidence at all of swiping aff commissions? Why even get in bed for a second w/ those guys if there is that dark of a cloud.

Even if I only care about myself, how do I know it didn’t overwrite some of my cookies when the user was navigating around my site? I’d rather not trade dollars for dimes.

So is the post garbage? Absolutely not!

I like your post Eli, but there are a ton of people who just do stuff word-for-word without thinking about what is best for their situation.

If someone wants to use this plan that Eli laid out, just use other methods like CPA deals, adsense, or whatever. I like everyone’s brainstorming about other ideas - keep it up. Look forward to more posts - especially about the automating/scraping.

PS for Matt (looking for images) - pscrape, wget, and Imagemagick may be good scripts if you want to automate something. Otherwise the CC search at [21] http://search.creativecommons.org/ should give you a quick tool for pics that are allowed under commercial license

Well, despite all the above i’m just going to follow Eli’s excellent post step by step and see what happens, I’ve already got about 3000 images last night, my domain is registered. I’m just looking at what to use my site with. Probably Joomla or similar.

I will let you know my results. I agree that many people may be tying this, but there is a LOT of traffic for screensavers, so all you are trying to do is get a small proportion of that massive traffic per day.

Well we’ll see.

#53 Comment By Kristofer On November 21, 2006 @ 3:55 pm

This was a really great post and I plan on utilizing some parts of it. However I’d like to explain something on the Zango part to those saying it doesn’t steal affiliate money. On many sites, when you get redirected there, an affiliate for that site has paid to have their full page ad pop up. Now say you send a potential customer to an affiliate program’s site hoping to make a sale. But as soon as they get there a second window for the same site appears on top of the one you opened only with this other person’s affiliate id. The surfer will most likely mistake the pop up for the link they clicked and viola a good way to lose money. I’m not bashing Zango or those who use it, just trying to explain a point of view. Regardless of the entire Zango debate this is a fantastic post though.

Its called Screen Saver Builder.
[23] http://www.download.com/Screen-Saver-Builder/3000-2409_4-10353859.html?tag=lst-0-1
its $20 but it has a fully functional 21 day trial.

#55 Comment By neon On November 21, 2006 @ 11:43 pm

Eli thanks a lot for this post. I have no problem with following your plan step by step. I have already invested the money and get employee to do the repetitive work. I know the logic of business already.

Anyway, I would like to ask. What’s the risk of using non public images? For example the ones I find wiht google image search? Is it a big risk for me?

And if I understand it right, with Zango I get money after they install the exe file. Why the hassle with 20 images at all? Surfers could get away with 3 images screensaver and I still get the money, no? They won’t realise the quality of my screensaver. I will already cash the money from them.

But I am the most interested about the non public images and the risk involved, if anyone could share their opinion or even experiences, please?

#56 Comment By Eli On November 22, 2006 @ 12:10 am

neon, Excellent question! I was expecting that exact question and wondering why no one has asked it yet. The bad advice for me to give is to tell you to go ahead and use any ol’ pictures you find. However, chances are the pictures are so spread around even if the original owner tried to track them down the chances of them finding it on your screensaver are slim to none. The chances are even slimmer of them caring. If they did find it, before they could take any legal action and actually expect to win they must first send you a cease and desist letter.

My personal fealings are, if finding nonpublic use pictures took you an extra couple minutes to get each picture than its worth recreating the screensaver if you get such a letter with nonpublic pictures. Using any random pictures of your subject actually works to your advantage time wise.

The only major reason why i said get noncopyright pictures was because Zango WILL ask you if the pictures are copyrighted. If you say I don’t know or no they will tell you no on creating the bundles and you will have to redo them first.

#57 Comment By Robert On November 22, 2006 @ 11:40 am

The other issue is, a screen saver with only 3 pictures - may get poor reviews on the download sites.

Whereas a picture with say 20 pictures in 1024×768 resolution of trees for a north american nature screen saver would probably fly under the radar. =)

Those of you looking at this post and thinking about doing it but don’t want to spend hours looking for images to use I suggest you try posting a project on rentacoder or getafreelancer to find someone to outsource that part of the project. I just hired a freelancer from a company I’ve worked with before to provide 150 screensavers worth of images (3,000 images total) for the grand price of $50 :) Outsourcing is your friend!

#59 Comment By Kavemn On November 24, 2006 @ 12:36 pm

Eli you strike again. I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time and i think im gunna have to give this idea a shot. I talked to my AM at zango and will be testing this some time next week with an awsome niche that i thinks pretty untapped. Maybe ill throw something up on wf about it if it works well. Thanks for the idea!

#61 Comment By scott On November 24, 2006 @ 9:44 pm

Why do we have to do step 5? Do we have to upload onto a sepereate website before sending them to be bundled at zango?

Thanks

#62 Comment By Eli On November 24, 2006 @ 10:05 pm

scott, step five is actually very important. the pad files and software directories will want the url to the description of the screensaver. Many ppl prefer to visit the download page before they click the download. So you will get a greater increase in installs. This also has the added benefit of giving you more inbound links instead of each download site linking to the same page. Which causes it to loose link value. Each page and download you create should pull about a PR4-5 after the software submission. This also helps in the seo aspect.

Thanks kaveman and someone.

aftman and robert that is some great advice.

Is there a free hosting domain that I can upload these screensavers onto that isn’t geocities or something?

NeoDownloader 2.1. Does this program just get the pictures from databases or websites or whatever or does it make sure they are not copywrited?

A couple of Free hosting places I recommend are zephyrhosting.net (no ads at all) or Byethost.com. Much more professional and very easy to setup.

#69 Comment By afmatt On November 26, 2006 @ 1:31 am

anyone on here have any idea of a “off the shelf” script for a screensaver site? Would be nice to skip having to design/outsource the site. :D

#70 Comment By Ajlicak On November 26, 2006 @ 1:12 pm

I like the byethost.com. Is 20gb bandwidth and 150mb storage enough for over 300 screensavers?

#71 Comment By Eli On November 26, 2006 @ 1:21 pm

150mb should be just enough. If you go through zango then they will host the screensavers for you so no worries.

#72 Comment By Randy Jackson On November 26, 2006 @ 1:22 pm

So we have to upload our screensavers onto our website, THEN talk to zango? Once they bundle them for me do i put the bundled ones onto my website and replace the ones i uploaded before?

#73 Comment By Antz On November 26, 2006 @ 1:23 pm

150mb storage won’t be enough for 300 screensavers, unless they’re really small ones.

Just buy some cheap $2 hosting or something.

#74 Comment By Randy Jackson On November 26, 2006 @ 1:37 pm

What is good bandwidth?? I have no idea

#75 Comment By Eli On November 26, 2006 @ 1:48 pm

If your not going to have the screensavers hosted elseware consider the daily bandwidth. If you got 20gb/monthly then thats a little over 650mb/day. Consider at least 100mb for page traffic and another 10mb for padfile pulls(they pull quite often). Than that leaves you with 540mb/day. If your screensavers are about a meg each thats a max of 540 downloads/day. One way to lighten the load is to signup with two free hosting accounts, one strictly to host the files. then in your pad(download description file) specify two mirrors. That will often help you lighten the load. Often times ppl will click on Mirror 2 instead of Mirror 1.

Edit: I forgot to mention that if you start seeing bandwidth issues a 301 redirect also works in emergency cases.

#76 Comment By Johnasi On November 26, 2006 @ 5:38 pm

Thanks! great advice!

Does Zango host the files after they bundle them and i just link to the files on my website?
Do i have to host them? Can you explain this?

#77 Comment By Eli On November 26, 2006 @ 5:49 pm

johnasi,
zango will host them. its better that way, cus when they make changes to the bundles they can just do them automatically. However one thing i forgot to mention is, sometimes the software submission sites want the software intself to be located on your site. So its best to put a 301 redirect in your .htaccess file to the zango then link to the screensaver.exe
for instance on your website and pad files you link to yourdomain.com/screensaver.exe
then in the htaccess file you 301 redirect to the zango download. This tends to work much better. It is also a lot safer because if you ever decided to drop zango you don’t have to resubmit all your software you can just change the redirect.

#78 Comment By Johnasi On November 26, 2006 @ 5:56 pm

Thanks! I have to learn about 301 redirects now.haha. Thanks, i am sorting my images out right now, then plan to build my website very simple like, then submit to zango, then 301 redirct to zangos links. So i have to host a non bundled version on my websites (mirror 2 thing you suggested) then when the user clicks on the links, the 301 direct will go to the zango download?

#79 Comment By Johnasi On November 26, 2006 @ 6:10 pm

wait nevermind. The mirror 2 thing was only for bandwidth correct?

#80 Comment By Antz On November 26, 2006 @ 8:02 pm

How long does ZangoCash generally take to accept? :/
Are they very strict on people joining there program?

#81 Comment By Eli On November 27, 2006 @ 10:52 am

Not sure how long it takes i joined a long time ago. They may take awhile for them to get the screensavers bundled though. especially if you have a ton to do. They are not strict on joining but they are very strict on how you promote the bundles. Promoting to software and screensaver directories as well as search engines is perfectly acceptable so feel free to tell them that. Also they will ask about the content of the screensavers. They will want you to tell them that it is general public use pictures and not copyrighted content. If you just answer their questions when they have them they are usually very easy to work with.

#82 Comment By Bill On November 27, 2006 @ 11:16 am

Do the images in your screensavers have to be copyrighted or non copyrighted? I’m confused.

#83 Comment By Eli On November 27, 2006 @ 11:21 am

noncopyrighted, but read the comments above for the more specific answers to that question.

#84 Comment By Bill On November 27, 2006 @ 11:28 am

“Choose from an ever-growing catalog of the latest online content – Free for you and free for your users! Hundreds of the latest videos, plus a selection of audio, full version games and software.”

I’m not sure what method im going to use yet, but why bother making the screensavers at all? Zango apparently offers audio, games and software?

Are the screensavers being made to be sent to the free download sites, so you get traffic to your website?

#85 Comment By Jon On November 27, 2006 @ 2:48 pm

Hey.. yeah you may be promoting a spyware company, but look at the bright side to all of this, you’ve never had 85+ responses to any of your posts before! Haha!!

But in any case, I think you did fuck up by mentioning Zango. Like I wrote on WickedFire.com — I was approached by them to do a campaign buy since I am known for buying a lot of traffic, and about 30 mins before we launched it, I got cold feet and pulled out, they refunded the campaign for me and that was that. The reason I pulled out was I started to do research and saw that they were exactly like Gator/Claria. I may have little or no ethics, but for a company that steals money from affiliate links, that’s just a low blow, and I will forever boycott people like that.

#86 Comment By Eli On November 27, 2006 @ 3:25 pm

Hey Jon thanks for the comment,
Yeah its kind of funny how this particular post seemed to draw the most attention. I think this was a ground breaking post simply because no one else has ever come right out and told ppl how to make money before and made an attempt to actually help them with it as a community. It’s a start to a good thing in my opinion. I really hope other IM sites follow suite.

Thats good that you stuck to your guns on the Zango thing. I think its important to know where to draw the moral line and never sway from it(see the post after this one).

Do I regret mentioning Zango? Hell no! haha that couldn’t of turned out better. It really got people thinking and coming up with their own ideas. In the end it posed more solutions than problems. I poked through a ton of old projects before deciding on this one. I think I definitely chose the right one.

I don’t want this blog to create a bunch of formula following drones nor do I want it to produce a bunch of unethical bastards. I’m not going to say using zango is or isn’t ethical. Thats for them to decide. People need to make decisions for themselves and choose their own paths when taking on a project. Everything about this project proposal made for great practice.

Thanks for your thoughts!

#87 Comment By Bill On November 27, 2006 @ 10:45 pm

Thanks for writing this article, it made me think of alternative ways to make money online. I will not be using this method to make money though, I do not agree with how Zango works.

#88 Comment By Kristofer On November 28, 2006 @ 12:47 am

So how far along is everyone? I’ve made 308 screen savers and for the most part finished the website and at this point am just figuring out how to monopolize on this every step of the way before I write my pad files and get started with the submissions.

#90 Comment By Kristofer On November 28, 2006 @ 2:30 pm

I’m doing cars, which I’m regretting a little bit because while it was incredibly easy to think of 300 cars I really wonder how many people want a screensaver of a low end audi… Of course that might be made up for with the muscle cars and the like.

#91 Comment By Eli On November 28, 2006 @ 2:39 pm

good job kristopher,
I actually made one for bmws, its very popular. You are probably right a few of them won’t be very popular others will be hugely popular. So it will probably even out a bit. For instance Mustangs will probably become huge.

#93 Comment By Eli On November 28, 2006 @ 3:36 pm

You got my attention bryan, got any further info on this?
Does these lawsuits pertain to show cars, manufacturer models, or pictures of other people’s cars?

I can see lawsuits happening from pictures of the manufacturers model cars or concept cars, but how can someone get sued for an image of a car someone else personally owns unless it’s by that person? I’m no lawyer so I’d love to see some cases where people have gotten sued by car companies for using their images and lost.

#94 Comment By Jazz On November 29, 2006 @ 1:02 pm

Hey, Eli I was really hoping you could add to what you posted earlier when you said

“If you really don’t want to distribute anything, you could always just change their homepage to include your google search link.”

1. First I was wondering how profitable this would be when compared to using zango(0.45 cents per download) I wonder if it would be even more profitable, especially over time, considering how often users click on ads.

2. Also I was wondering exactly how you would go about doing this? Is this something you could do with a few lines of code in the install? Or would it be a more involved process? Like making a near exact replica of google’s website and hosting it yourself? Because this idea sounds possibly even more profitable then the first.

Feedback greatly appreciated!

#95 Comment By Jazz On November 29, 2006 @ 2:18 pm

Hey guys, i’ve been checking out other alternatives to zango and found a list of other pay per install programs that I also don’t know anything about. I thought that i’d post it to see if anybody knows anything about them.

But i’m still really interested in the google search box idea. I can see a lot of potential in that, as i’ve heard about people who’ve made some pretty good money using it, and others who’ve made very little.

Sorry here is link [24] http://www.pay-per-install.com/

#97 Comment By Eli On November 29, 2006 @ 3:01 pm

jazz, its all done during the install. of course you’d have to create a seperate installer. but you can change registry keys with a simple installer program.

as far as that list, i’d recommend you stay away from teddycash(never payed out)
yoursitebar(they wont’ bundle, part of istbar and gammacash)
iframecash installs dialers(one of those moral things)
makethemcry-doesn’t bundle and converts horribly
freezecoldcash- never pays out, although they have ready made screensavers. Bummer too.

Eli,
I for one would love to see a post on a howto on the google search side of this, heck - that would be awesome to use instead of zango and folks would not even NOTICE that they have it if I understand things right.

How long did they tell you it would take to bundle 300~ screensavers?

I’ve spoken to my manager …

He told me that it would be best to give them to him in bundles of 50… and each bundle would take at least 2 weeks…

I didn’t expect it to be this long.

What sort of time did it take for yours guys?

Cheers.

Any suggestions for another company to use other than Zango? A rep from there yesterday told me that they have changed their terms and now ALL installs must START on a page you own, pushing traffic from other sites (like the ones promosoft submits to) is no longer allowed as of about 10 days ago… Any ideas of a good replacement?

#110 Comment By Eli On December 15, 2006 @ 1:48 pm

wow matt thats news to me. I’m going to have to talk to them about that. Thats ridiculous. I know they require a landing page for the ddr I don’t see a single reason why they would hold that rule for applications. I mentioned they were strict. I say bargain with them and ensure that the traffic is legit and that the software download sites should count as a sufficient landing page.

#111 Comment By afmatt On December 15, 2006 @ 3:04 pm

I tried talking to my rep, he said there’s nothing he can do that its a new company policy and they have to stick to it - he’s not real happy about it either I don’t think… I suspect that they are trying to make themselves more “FTC friendly” with this move…

#118 Comment By Gabor On December 22, 2006 @ 6:22 pm

And what if you submit only your download page to these software dirs? So when someone wants to install the ssaver, he has to visit your landing page first.

#119 Comment By Eli On December 22, 2006 @ 6:44 pm

they actually link to both. It is required for most software directories to provide the direct exe. Although you could(probably get deleted for it) do a 301 redirect to the landing page with the url you provide for the exe. Just make sure the page has some frame buster javascript code in it, because they usually have a downloading splash page that loads the url to the exe in an iframe.

#120 Comment By Dino On December 23, 2006 @ 2:24 am

I made the list mentioned here [28] http://www.pay-per-install.com I never had problems with sites listed on my site… It is possible that they keeping paying me on time because they know that I bring some new webmasters to them but anyway I have referred few WM and they had stable incomes as I can see from my side. TeddyCash paid already 2 times and also Yazzle.

Eli, I am unsure as to how you are so sure that as many as 250 users are going to download and install this bundled software out of a set of 300, per day?
What evidence is there that users will download this frequently? And of those users, how many will actually proceed with the install process?
Maybe I missed something, but are people really that oblivious to what they are installing?
great article though, thanks.

Just a side note for those starting the project, I don’t believe Yazzle tracks downloads where the click did not originate from your site either. If you look at their exe file it’s made by 180solutions, the same company that owns Zango. #141 Comment By Gonzo On January 19, 2007 @ 1:55 pm

Zango says that download must start from your webpage, so that basicaly means that you can’t directly link to exe file on screensaver sites.

#142 Comment By Eli On January 19, 2007 @ 3:12 pm

yep,
this means that submitting to software directories are technically against the TOS because they require a link directly to the exe. Which of course makes the whole point of bundling software/screensavers with zango worthless in the first place.
Some people are reporting back with good results with teddy cash. I’m not sure though, I’ll see if I can contact them and score some info.

One option i’m seeing in forums on this subject is to include a html file with the install than when the install is done execute the html file. Have the html file redirect to the google pack. pack.google.com.
They pay $2.00/install.

#150 Comment By R On January 21, 2007 @ 1:06 pm

Eli- I was just going to post about google pack. As of now I am having the screensavers built for me, and I will be implementing the .bat example that was posted above.

I figure it doesn’t hurt to at least try teddycash, etc. What would you recommend to track the number of people that install your program - to make sure that you can track if you are being paid or not!

hehe looks like I beat you to it :)

Good question though!
I guess it depends on who you use to bundle. I’m going to try the google pack thing so I’m going to change up my custom script. I’m going to have the html page(or shortcut whatever i’m going to use) to redirect to my script. My script will record the ip, check for uniqueness, do an arin whois to grab the country, then update the global stats by country. The problem with most pay-per-install programs are that they differ the pay by country. The biggest problem of all is that they only pay per “unique install.” Meaning if the clientside computer already had their software installed at one point than it won’t count any new ones. So thats seemingly impossible to take into account. Through Zango I found my personal recorded stats were exceedingly different than the installs they said I got, but what can I do about it? Nothing exactly.

May be a good incentive for people to download the Google pack!

#154 Comment By Jake On January 22, 2007 @ 1:46 pm

How do you get a landing page for google pack? I can only see how to get the html for a text/banner link.

I tried making a page and previewing it and copy and pasting the url, but it’s a mile long and doesn’t seem like it would work right.

Any suggestions on that?

Thanks!

#155 Comment By Eli On January 22, 2007 @ 2:00 pm

When you’re logged into your Adsense you click the Adsense Setup tab. Then click Referals. Then select Google Pack.

#156 Comment By Jake On January 22, 2007 @ 2:04 pm

Yes, I understand how to get the Google Pack code, but the code is just that - code for a text link or banner.

How do you get the actual landing page url that you would redirect the end user to so they don’t have to click on a text link or banner first?

#157 Comment By Eli On January 22, 2007 @ 2:12 pm

I’m not familiar enough with google pack yet. You may have to email adsense about that and ask them permission to use a direct landing page link.

#158 Comment By seocracy On January 22, 2007 @ 4:23 pm

I was considering using the BAT method mentioned above and have it automatically open up an HTML file included in the archive. That HTML file would jump the user to the google pack using the code you get from Adsense Setup.

Or would that be against TOS?

BTW, Zango still works well for me, as I host all the files on my own server. It brings in decent cash everyday, but this month I’ve seen it dip a wee bit….not sure why…

seocracy - are you promoting zango elsewhere, or just on your site? Just wondering how you get the screensavers out there - and if you do promote it, you are saying Zango hasn’t done anything about it?

One quick thing- what exactly do you send to these companies - the install file and that is all? I guess you upload them somewhere and then they change them and you download them again?

Thanks!

#161 Comment By Seocracy On January 24, 2007 @ 10:53 am

I discussed this with my rep and we arranged that I would by all in the clear as long as the download of the bundles take place from MY server (not their server). So Zango approved my site as a registered affiliate site and thereby it is permissible under their TOS for me to promote in any way I choose as long as the download originates from my site.

Sending the installs to Zango was a pain in the arse because they kept going “oh, and you also have to include this” so it took several submissions before they finally got what they needed. Basically its this: A package of 50 screensaver installs at a time (or whatever else you are promoting) including a text file for each install describing its function and contents, as well as a thumbnail of an image from each install that has to be a specific dimension.

Further, the executable for each install has to meet some specific criteria: it has to have a dialog window that a user can click through (ie: install shield) By dialog, I mean that they do not accept installs that just do all the installation without user interaction. Also the install must be registered in the “Add/Remove Programs” menu so that a user can uninstall it. I used WISE installation shield to create these….it was a bugger to learn but easy once I figured it out.

There are some other requirements that Im sure Im forgetting because my mind is elsewhere…you best to talk to your rep and really grill him/her for all the information before you start working and waste your time and energy like I did at first.

Make sense? I hope this answers your questions.

Good luck.

Maybe this post has brought a too high increase of screensavers makers and it’s better to wait for another 6 months, like with the abandonned wordpress accounts trick?

#171 Comment By StrayBullet On February 1, 2007 @ 2:14 pm

I must admit Zango can be a major PIA - they don’t tell you what you need to do, but they will tell you after you done the work and then you may have to redo it a 2nd or 3rd time.

Your screen saver must have a disclaimer with your contact info, your system requirements need to be shown before they begin the install, it must show in Add/Remove programs, it may not auto update, etc. etc. etc.

And the software directories redirecting to Zango’s link is a NO NO they must end up on your page and click the download from there.

There must be something better than Zango out there, I am waiting to hear suggestions…

Thanks

ALRIGHTY GUYS!
The verdict is in.
Couple notes.

First!
I tested the promoting of Google pack by installing a shortcut to my aff link through my adsense account into the programs folder and then executing it after the completed install. It is making approximately 70%-73% of what Zango was making with the same number of screensavers. Also, I put in the registry command to change their homepage to my search engine using Google Search, also in my Adsense account. It is growing steadily and currently is making about 35% of what the Zango was making. I realize it can’t go up for ever and will eventually plateau but I am hoping it will top the Zango money. Which means together I would of potentially doubled my screensaver income and not had to resort to promoting adware.

More So!
I got two emails from people asking me to check out [31] http://www.rasermedia.com/. I checked them out, they seem willing to do the screensaver bundling, I’m not sure how long they will still be willing to do so once they get a couple hundred people requesting it but hey its worth a shot. I personally haven’t tried anything with them yet.

Lastly!
I’m getting reports from people using different screensaver making software, I’m assuming more expensive ones, that allow you to insert your own RSS feeds directly into the screensaver. I’ve heard a couple reports of people making good money by inserting their related affiliate links into their rss feeds.

Sorry it took so long for me to report back with some solutions. I just wanted to make sure I could give you some pliable solutions.

#181 Comment By nick On February 23, 2007 @ 3:06 pm

You should be very careful about changing people’s homepages without giving them the option to not do it. It is illegal in the State of Washington and they have filed lawsuits against people for doing it.

#182 Comment By Eli On February 24, 2007 @ 11:05 am

Good point. make sure to give them the option to not have you change the homepage. Also be sure to put it in the installations TOS.

I’m also working on a deal with Zango to allow all the people that came from this site(the ppl signed up under my aff id). to be able to bundle the screensavers they have made.

#192 Comment By Ben On March 13, 2007 @ 4:10 am

Guys,

I came across this little tool that generates a “browser windows” that lets you specify a url to open when someone double click the icon. Let’s call this tool “browser generator”.

Here’s how I’m using it to work around the “download must start from your webpage” requirement by Zango.

At this point of time, I must already have my screensaver bundled PLUS have the screensaver website up. So, let’s take for example, the url is

[32] http://www.domain.com/screensaver.html

This is where I had the links to download my screensaver. Then, I use browser generator to generate a “browser app” and name it screensaver.exe. Take note, this is not the bundled screensaver. This is just a shell that once double clicked, will open a browser window and load the url “http://www.domain.com/screensaver.html” where the visitor can download the actual screensaver. In this scenario, when the visitor download the screensaver, it will be from your site, rather then the software directory. I will just proceed to submit screensaver.exe (browser app) to the software directories.

So far, this method is working fine for me. And the browser generator software does not cost much too. Only $10. If any of you guys wanted to try this method, its available at [33] http://browser-generator.ebook-press.com. This is not an affiliate link. If more of you show interests, I can contact the vendor and arrange for a bulk discount.

#193 Comment By Ben On March 13, 2007 @ 4:25 am

Hmm… seems like comments appear immediately… That must mean that my comment about the workaround is lost..

Gonna try again..

Basically, Zango says that download and install must start from our own website, so software directories download is out. Here’s a workaround…

You must already have your screensaver bundled and website up in order to proceed. So, if you are stuck with getting the screensaver bundled, tough luck.

I am using a software “Browser Generator” to generate little browser app that launches a certain url when double clicked on. So here’s what I do… Launch Browser Generator and create a browser app that points to your screensaver url (eg. [34] http://www.screensaverdomain.com/screensaver.html). Let’s name this browser app “screensaverbrowser.exe”. Take note… this is not the screensaver itself. And I proceed to submit screensaverbrowser.exe to the software directories.

So, when visitors downloaded my screensaverbrowser.exe and launch on their computer, all they see is a browser window showing this url:
[35] http://www.screensaverdomain.com/screensaver.html

Of course, this url has my bundled screensavers that they can download and install… in the process, also install zango’s software. Kaching!!!

One thing though. Browser Generator is not free, but it is reasonably cheap at $10. Here’s the link to the website:

[36] http://browser-generator.ebook-press.com

Hope this helps.

Ben

Still aching for anymore information, if anyone has anything. I’m going to go ahead with it anyway, since there seems to be multiple monetization options, if the bundling fails.

#195 Comment By Rob On March 14, 2007 @ 8:05 am

A better way of doing it.. Is to use an .htaccess file redirect from say

[38] http://mydomain.com/downloads/abbyscreensaver.exe to 301 redirect it to the zango flash installer page.

much higher converstion + when submitting PAD files they link straight to the exe which is a forward to the zango….

Don’t want them to think they’re downloading something 2x heh.

Ok, it’s been 4 months. Anyone making $100 per day yet?

#197 Comment By John D On March 15, 2007 @ 2:02 pm

I’ve done this project part-time so I’ve got only about 80 screensavers, and I’m earning about $8 a day, not bad, but I’ve got work before reaching the $100 per day :)
Some quick stats : it takes me half an hour to get pictures for one screensaver (because quality actually counts, I started making crappy screensavers with 10 images and now I’m doing 30+ high quality images, and the install rate is much higher, yeah people give their opinion on the internet).
Then 15 minutes to bundle the screensaver, and 15 minutes to post it, update my website.
On average, it takes me 1h/screensaver, and I get $3 a month on average for each screensaver, when I have 1000 screensavers I’ll be good, but it’ll take me 1000 hours, thus 2-3 years to get this far :)

hi John
which method are you using?
Zango or alternative one?

#201 Comment By John D On March 17, 2007 @ 8:45 am

I use Zango of course, Googlepack install (Eli’s idea), and also changing the homepage to my google search page.

Overall Googlepack install is peanuts (maybe $2 last month), Zango requirements are cumbersome at first but after getting used to it, it makes me about $5 a day (about $140 last month). And settings the homepage to your google search page (simple page with a logo and adsense code for google search) brings me about $2 a day (that’s $50 extra).

Almost $200 last month, not bad at all if you consider the rate/hour. I think it took me about 100-120hours for 80 screensavers, that’s about $2/hour for every month that my screensavers will be downloaded, so after 6 months, it will beat my current hourly salary!

I’ve just made 10 really neat screensavers, without any monetization from zango or other guys. Just changed the homepage to a site I made which grabs rss feeds etc and looks just like a “home page”, laid some affiliate & ad mines around, posted them about a week ago.

I got caught up in other business so the screensavers just went out of my head until today, I checked the stats of the homepage and already I have a solid 150 users/day who search, click on affiliate links etc and in one week it has made me $97 from aff. sales, ad clicks & search.

I made 3 different screensaver groups: one group of a couple of tv shows, one group adult and one group landscapes. I made different start pages for all of them (basically the tv show screensaver’s homepage shows rss feeds about upcoming movies & shows & gossips, has dvd rental and amazon-like affiliates etc while the adult one, as can be guessed, is a proud affiliate of adultfriendfinder and adult pay master etc etc..)

I’m planning to put a little more time in this and broaden the categories. It might really be a long-runner as far as I can see.

Thanks for the inspiration Eli, really :)

“Where are you promoting them?” I guess I didn’t understand what you meant by that.

If you’re asking about the screensavers, I’ve just uploaded them to about 500 software sites with robosoft.

With keyword-high descriptions and titles. My sites don’t rank in the search engines yet but 2 of my screensavers in the software sites rank in the first 5 results for my targeted keywords in google. And it happened in 1 day I should say. I uploaded the ss’s and the next day when I did a google search, I saw the page with my screensaver rank in the first 5 results. It was quite nice :)

to pack your own exe in with the screensavers, just use a file packer. UPX is a very good one and its free.

it might be possible to stick another exe inside of the ones Zango gives back to you. you can also try to install multiple toolbars, adwares, etc all with the same screensaver to help maximize revenue.

better yet, just write a web downloader for yourself. pack it in with the screensaver and make it grab the ad software from your server and run(install) it in the background, that way you can change what it installs.

Zango..

1 Doesn’t give you back the exes, they MUST be installed from their server unless you have a agreement to do otherwise

2 Doesn’t allow you to include live updates

3 Does not allow you to bundle anything with the exes their competition

Have you even read the TOS , because anyone doing this would just be wasting their time and the screen savers would be disapproved instantly.

Hey Eli good shit man… i enjoy reading your blog posts… With all of the comments its a bit hard to follow…

Is there a way to take this post and update it or possibly add create a series out of this post and just add other methods and suggestions from the comments in to the post with their own separate titles or something?

Maybe fix the comments so that you are the only one able to make comments, but in this case ‘updates’ lets say if aff. companies change up their TOS…

still good reading…

Did anybody try this and can post a link to his site?

#241 Comment By Jake On June 5, 2007 @ 1:13 pm

I tried it and I thought it was waaaay too much time and effort for the money.

Forget about listing your site on the BIG download directories because they won’t allow Zango and the other crap adware programs, or software that sets the home page without user consent, etc.

You can also get your savers flagged as spyware or a trojan by the antispyware software.

When that happens, you’re back to square one and have to do something else all over again.

This may be a way to make SOME money, but it’s slow and tedious and frankly, not many people will like you very much when you tell them you make free screensavers that distributes adware and spyware in them, because most people know that stuff causes people’s computers to clog up, slow down, crash, etc.

Well, that’s MY experience and thoughts about it anyway.

Anyone else?

#242 Comment By Dave Idea Tester On June 5, 2007 @ 1:50 pm

Hey guy’s I have used different idea’s of packing games in .exe files and have the bundle software in a sfx.exe to run in the background. Once I had a few downloads I think people cought on that I Crap-ware in the downloads and finding one of mysite’s getting Go0gle noted with this site is known for Spyware/Adware Virus blah blah. Before that happened I made 32.00 buck’s almost every month for 3 months. I lost a PageRankg 3 site now it’s crap.

I found using PDF files pretty evective on another site that site is still up and running I am getting $24.83 just under $25 a month that is for the past 2 month’s. The pdf’s pretty easy using a php script that will convert anything I put on a website to a pdf file and then compress the file as well.

I have made a little bit on putting my aff link to a video site that pay’s for clips in the PDF and trying how to video’s in with the how to PDF then they click on the video and download the bundle and I get a bit more out of this.

I know not really a WOW! these idea’s have been around for a bit with aff marketer’s. I am only speaking of the other idea’s I have tried I am not saying anything bad about anybody eles’s idea’s.

This does take some time to do. Those who are more savy to macro’s windows shell codes batch file’s and so on I am sure have no problem getting the job done a bit sooner.

So I am game for any new ideas or concepts that are out there. I will give SHOT.

Thanks again Eli. for having this topic as well as I have learned so, much from reading from your site and everyone who jumps in and helps or yeah…

if anyone is like me and either too lazy to program a toolbar or just doesn’t know how, there is a good program that can help -

I downloaded it for free and the interface is easier to use than some of the other programs out there. it also has a built in function for google adsense search. You can screw around with the fully funtional free one, but it’s branded with their logo. for 75.00 you can remove the brand. I never could find a working hack for the newest version to get out of the 75 bucks. oh well.

I’m not affiliated w this product, but I love Eli and his stuff, so wanted to share.

#244 Comment By Vhaeos On June 8, 2007 @ 10:35 am

As mentioned already, you don’t have to distribute spyware, or change someones homepage without their permission. If you just put an opt-in on your installer, give them a choice, then the download sites wont care, and everything will be great.

Plus if you set the opt-in to auto check, they generally just ignore it anyway.

Glad I found this website and am very impressed at how long the discussion on this post has continued. The ideas and opinions in the comments are at this point just as good as the original post that inspired the conversation. Anyway, the one point in the article that seems to have been overlooked by most of the comments (not sure if ever comment missed it, but there were so many comments that I had to stop reading) is the end statement about getting off your butt, stop whining about your day job, and do something about it. To a certain extent, I’m guilty as charged. I don’t whine about my day job, but I am guilty of sitting around and talking about good ideas (or at least I think they are good) but fail to do anything about my ideas. This post reminded me to get off my butt and start doing something with my ideas. Thanks for the reminder to get up and get going.

Quick tip: keyword stuff your PAD file descriptions. Don’t overdo it, of course. But if you have a high keyword density in the PAD description there’s a good chance that your product page on one of the major download sites will rank high in the SERP’s.

Hi, anybody wanna try this together?
Just for the fun of it.

I have a domain purchased for one year.
I can do coding.
I have someone who can make me some screensavers.
And I have a hosting with like 5 GB of monthly bandwith (so I guess one should change it pretty soon if everything goes.

Now, I would need some design, some business plan (I mean monetization: Zango is not good anymore, I guess), and assistance with the set-up and the screensaver-making (it costs me money after all).
Plus I don’t really have experience.

It would be cool if you had some background or something. I just don’t want to take in random people as it’s risky on the net.
Anyway, anyone interested, email me at teksht [47] _the@sign_ gmail _dot_ com.
A limited time offer (I’m gonna hold this for a day or two maybe).

Some of you are just naive, some of you don’t get it and some of you are just plain STUPID! I am so tired of affiliates hurting themselves and our entire industry!

Zango will block and/or deletes everyone’s affiliate ads and/or or cookies from other affiliates programs. With that you are hurting the entire industry.

Read this thread that follows to find out all the reasons promoting this or any other download program that installs adware or spyware is not only WRONG, but can hurt your own pocketbook and our industry in the process.

Or you can just search for “Zango adware” and find out there is over 205,000 references.

Everyone in industry knows that Zango is adware. Only “blue SEO expert” is playing stupid and teaching kids how to spread this nasty crap for few dollars per day. So if Zango is no good, what should I use?

#280 Comment By Thomas On August 6, 2007 @ 2:14 pm

I think it’s important to pick a niche that is not too crowded with screen savers yet. The problem otherwise will be that everybody offers the same ones, so newer sites are having a harder time ranking in the search engines and actually making money.
I think that if you go for more obscure themes, it would be easier, as there are fans for almost everything and everybody imaginable, but not that much competition for less well known people or things.
What I think about Zango? I know their past, which isn’t very good, but they were fined now, and they should have cleaned up their act now, so I don’t really see a problem with it. It’s an easy way to make some cash, so no reason not too. It kind of depends on how evil you are.
If you don’t mind forcing users to download music, then there is no problem. Otherwise, you might want to develop an alternative strategy. But, the basic steps of this guide can still be used and applied to other niches, and other moneymaking methods!

#281 Comment By gimp On August 8, 2007 @ 6:13 pm

You could always just make one site for one of them, and once you’re up and running and making a few bucks, copy all your stuff, edit your names and descriptions etc, and make another site with another aff prog :)

#282 Comment By vare On August 9, 2007 @ 11:31 am

I can offer assistance with bundling files. I can reverse engineer and create a single file out of any number of files for your conveniences. I’ll do this for you happily for $2 per file bundled. and I can change the icon to whatever you like “maybe a setup icon?” the resulting file, when executed will unbundled the bundled files (to what ever directory you wish) and run them all. I can also combine any file with a .dll file, when the file is ran, it will unbundled the dll to any directory you want. and register it. any questions please contact me at [52] [email protected].

#283 Comment By M On August 15, 2007 @ 6:11 am

A WARNING for anyone thinking of doing this:

Firstly, Zango is not “actively looking” for screensavers at the moment as they already have a large number in the works, and will say that they have to run your screensavers through their “content acquisition department” to see if they want them (ie they probably won’t take any of them). Something to beware of before spending many hours making several hundred screensavers and a website like I did.

Also, having a browser navigate to a Google Pack ad is probably against Google’s TOS:

“Webpages containing AdSense code may not be loaded by any software that can trigger pop-ups, redirect users to unwanted websites, modify browser settings, or otherwise interfere with site navigation. It is your responsibility to ensure that no ad network or affiliate uses such methods to direct traffic to pages that contain your AdSense code.”

It’s not crystal clear that opening a browser with a Google Pack ad would be classified as triggering a pop-up or redirecting to an unwanted site, but I think they’d probably say it is. So unless there’s another viable monetization strategy, it’s not worth doing this project.

#288 Comment By David On September 1, 2007 @ 11:45 am

So I set all this up (didn’t bundle with Zango, they said it would take 2 months) and submitted to pad sites etc. I have high conversion rates for clickthroughs on my site. Only problem is, I don’t get enough traffic.

Torrents are definitely a good way to go - except I managed to get banned from mininova… :)

So, 2 questions.

1) How are you guys driving traffic to your sites? My screensavers pop up the site on install but that’s not really enough.

2) I’m uploading to piratebay - but mininova gave much better results. Any ideas on how to submit so that the IPs don’t get banned and the torrents pulled?

#289 Comment By David On September 4, 2007 @ 5:50 pm

Personally I’m using [54] Robosoft for now. It has a fully-functional 30-day trial.

I can’t speak for Promosoft, but Robosoft also does a great job of processing CAPTCHAs, and updates its submission templated regularly.

#290 Comment By James On September 5, 2007 @ 8:18 pm

Why would your uploads to the torrent sites get banned? What are you doing that’s making them get banned and the torrents get pulled?

#291 Comment By David On September 6, 2007 @ 6:38 am

Weli, I’d bundled three with a pay-per-install thing. So I guess someone had kicked up a fuss and my IP, along with everything I’d uploaded, got pulled.

Hey guys I tried this project and was not happy with the results of Promosoft and Robosoft, because they are ok if you submit 1 screensaver, but when you want to do submit 300 screensavers it becomes a hell…
I also tracked stats and realized that submitting to 1000 websites was useless, eventually most of my traffic was coming from around 150 websites.
So I eventually coded myself a Pad submitter software which :
- handle a list of PAD, I can put the list of all screensavers I want to submit, click the button and go to sleep…
- submit to the most effective websites I tracked.

Because Eli’s blog inspired me to give tips and tricks like he does, to help people on SEO, brainstorming on ideas to make money online, I have started my own blog and as a “grand opening” gift, I give you my pad submitter tool for free. It’s still in beta stage, so please use it, send me comments and when I find it is stable enough, I will release the full version, and it will remain FOR FREE!!!

So just go to [56] Free Pad Submitter
Have fun with it!

What you are proposing with the GG pack is AGAINST the Google TOS:

[61] https://www.google.com/adsense/static/en_US/LocalizedTerms2.html
Part of Point 5 (Prohibited Uses.)
“(vi) directly or indirectly access, launch, and/or activate Ads, Links, Search Results, or Referral Buttons through or from, or otherwise incorporate the Ads, Links, Search Results, or Referral Buttons in, any software application, Web site, or other means other than Your Site(s), and then only to the extent expressly permitted by this Agreement (e.g., while Search Results may be indirectly accessed from Your Site(s), they may only be displayed on the appropriate Google-hosted Web page);”

Also, Zango is NOT moral if it does what I can read here. Please do not use it - you will just make the world a worse place. Have you ever tried to remove similar software from an infected pc? In most cases you can’t, you have to reinstall the pc to get rid of it all.

In the above post is listed as a threat.
We would like to correct this listing.

Zango is a safe and secure program which will not harm users’ computer.

We are certainly aware of the ever-growing number of harmful applications that have surfaced on the Web.
Please be assured that Zango, unlike such applications, will always make the user’s privacy our top priority. Zango is a safe and secure program which installs itself only upon user’s download and does nothing without the user’s consent.

Following are some clarifications on the function of Zango’s software:

1. Zango does not build personal profiles.
2. Zango does not gather any data you enter in online forms.
3. Zango does not access any sensitive information entered while surfing, such as account details, passwords, credit card information, products you purchase online, etc.
4. Zango’s installation does not install any third party applications. In addition, Zango can be installed only through a standard download process initiated by the user from Zango’s websites and is easy to uninstall.

Unfortunately, it appears that some scanning applications have mistakenly included Zango on their lists. We are aware of this situation and our legal team is contacting these companies in order to be removed from their lists.

Zango is a user friendly program, and it is of paramount importance to us that our program will function properly and will be easily installed and removed
You can remove Zango from your computer via “Add\Remove programs” (Start -> Control Panel -> Add\Remove programs), you may use our uninstaller and you may also use the uninstall instructions we offer under the Zango component in the program’s list

To remove Zango from your computer, please do the following:

1. Close all open applications/programs/windows
2. Go to: ‘Start’ - ‘Settings’ - ‘Control Panel’ - ‘Add\Remove Programs’
3. Click on ‘Zango Browser and Wowpapers Tools’
4. Click ‘Change/Remove’ button
5. Check the components you wish to remove, click ‘Next’ and follow the on-screen instructions.
6. Restart your computer

Alternatively, you can use our uninstaller:
1. Click on the following link - [63] http://installs.zango.com/downloads/Uninstaller/Uninstaller.exe
2. Click ‘Run’ and follow on-screen instructions
3. Restart your computer.

Hi Guys- I am pretty much a newbie - been marketing for a year - about breaking even so I am looking. I know html, but haven’t gotten into php much yet. I’m sure you are way ahead of me technically, I’m pretty old for this biz, I don’t even buy green bananas. Much of what you talk about is over my head. Is this Zango good or bad. Seems to be mixed opinions. About 4 years ago, before I knew better, I installed a program from Permission Research on a computer and had a devil of a time getting rid of it.

I have tried the magic little index script, I’ll see if it works.

Interesting forum, I am trying desperately to learn.

Pay per install is still viable, I’ve played around with this a bit here and there. I try to target celebrities which like to get themselves in trouble a lot (e.g Britney’s gang) and then target that.

It works ok, but it’s incredibly boring and you’re definitely selling your soul every paycheck

Chances are that Zango will steal your affiliate commission in the future and all you hard work will amount to nothing.

Probably you don’t need to copy the exact actions but you can still achieve the results with such thinking.

#360 Comment By Jay On February 20, 2008 @ 1:04 am

i’m afraid that zango is’nt aactually the most ethical affiliate program on the net.

we adult webmasters in particular, hate them. they steal traffic and eventually, sales, with the tricky programs they install into peoples computers

“Zango Adware is also known to hijack affiliate commissions by replacing the affiliate ID from a referring affiliate with their own affiliate ID. Therefore if a person’s computer is infested with Zango adware and that person visits a site via an affiliate link-Zango popups will remove that affiliates ID with their own thus stealing the actual affiliates commission. The following video demonstrates an affiliate link hijack in action (live demo of Zango affiliate link hijacking at the 3 minute, 10 second mark of the video):”

Zango is a MALWARE!
Zango is a maliscious spyware that generates popups over any site user is on and OVERWRITES THAT WEBSITES AFFILIATE CODES WITH THAT OF ZANGOS OR IT’S ADVERTISER!!

Let’s say you at bluehatseo are promoting XYZ search engine submitter.. User with Zango installed comes to bluehatseo via google query search engine submission software.. Zango pops a page OVER your site.. delivering ad to XYZ search engine submitter with THEIR affiliate code or that of someone whom bought the keyword.. the zango infected visitor NEVER SEES YOUR SITE..

#444 Comment By Thomas On July 23, 2008 @ 6:56 am

OK, the idea is basically good, but I really wonder
why no one seems to understand that duplicating these kind of moneymakers kills them.

IF everyone who commented here would do it the shareware directories would be flooded with 10000s of Screensavers.

Do You really believe that You will be getting 200 downloads a day still ?

See, there is a market for screensavers. This market is basically defined and with money making shemes like this the market is devided up into so many small pieces that no one really makes serious money in the end.

The only thing this leads to is that shareware directories won’t accept screensavers anymore.

If You really want to make money on the internet ( and not just some measily bucks ) then there is no way around building Your own QUALITY website with a decent product.

#445 Comment By newborn gift On July 29, 2008 @ 12:17 pm

#457 Comment By purger On August 15, 2008 @ 5:48 am

Great idea, and it probably used to work 2 years ago. I think that the number of people willing to install .exe files these days is significantly less then when this post was originally made.

However for people wanting to make $100 per day why not just stick to good old Adsense, create about 20 sites that will easy bring in $5 per day.

It should take you no more then a month at most to do it, some people here can probably do it in about few hours, and spend the next 2 to 3 months driving links to your
sites, or if you are really lazy use services like 3WayLinks to do it.

That is about all you need to do and you will have your $100 per day easy and it should take you no more then 3 to 4 months to reach it.

If you have some cash outsource article writing/rewriting and you can pump Adsense sites like crazy, be smart and stick a newsletter on them, build your list and market affiliate products.

#459 Comment By Toby On August 15, 2008 @ 3:02 pm

I think what Eli meant was, screensavers are just one idea. It’s about involking peoples thought process. Yes there are probably lots of screensavers out there - but it’s not the only thing you can create and give away.

You just have to use a little imagination :-)

I’m always searching for new ideas, however off the wall they may seem. If you experiement around somebodies idea, you often find you find something that works for you and it starts to bring in a nice little passive income.

Funny the reason people don’t post the ways to make money when they think of them is because once hundreds(thousands?) of people are doing it, nobody can do it successfully. @So how exactly can I tell whether the photo is or isn’t copyright protected?

You would have to check the terms of service for each domain. Generally speaking they will be copyright protected BUT if you check out press release websites you might find images you can freely distributed - also Wikipedia can be a good source of images which can be redistributed.

Not so sure about the screensaver. MySpace backgrounds would probably be your best bet if you’re targeting the celebrity market.

#486 Comment By Ps3 man On September 10, 2008 @ 11:23 am

Copyright-free photos are relativity easy to find for some subjects (e.g. cars) but it is fairly difficult to find them for celebrities though. I agree that Wikipedia is a good source of unprotected images. Anyone had good results with this yet?

#487 Comment By Career College Resource On September 10, 2008 @ 1:35 pm

Pictures that are in the google images index - are you able to use those freely or what are the limitations on those?

#488 Comment By NB Used Cisco On September 10, 2008 @ 10:26 pm

@ Pictures that are in the google images index - are you able to use those freely or what are the limitations on those?

Not unless you says you can on the site they originate from (look at the terms and conditions for that site).

@ Copyright-free photos are relativity easy to find for some subjects (e.g. cars)

I agree - make a car screensaver / set of MySpace layouts.

Hi Eli, I am new to everything imaginable on the Internet and creating websites. But I recently purchased DreamWeaver and am trying to learn about making some extra cash. Could you explain what a PPC campaign is, or direct me to other articles on your site that can guide a newbie through the process. I found this website while researching SEO on Google, since I read elsewhere its important if I am going to create a website. I want to try some of your ideas, trying to make some extra cash since I am a single parent with limited time to work anything above 40 hours a week since I have young school age children I need to be home for. I’m hope I am not coming across as lazy. I have browsed around your website before writing to you. Also, thanks for sharing your wealth of information with the rest of us.

#493 Comment By Kerry Menard On September 24, 2008 @ 3:22 pm

Eli, I’m so confused. All this talk about letting Zango bundle them, PAD files, BAT files, having your own web site, a separate page for each screensaver, or this way, that way….I just want to do it the easiest way. I bought the screen saver maker you suggested and have thus far created over 150 screen savers each with a minimum 20 high resolution images as you suggested. I sized each image to 1024×768. I found over 9000 images without any software help, it has taken me about three weeks so far. Wheeew…this is the reason I want to make some extra cash. This dame ain’t got no cash to hire anybody to do it for me, nor do I have much left over for my kids even working full-time. Help

#518 Comment By Mike On March 7, 2009 @ 12:51 am

I argree that this doesn’t work anymore. There’s no way to make $100 a day unless you already have the traffic. This post makes it sound easy but try getting anywhere on SERP1 for any niche no matter how small. There are wallpaper sites out there up the wazoo. I wasted a lot of time making wallpapers, couldn’t place on the SERPs and basically not worth the effort.

#519 Comment By Online Business Alliance On March 7, 2009 @ 6:07 am

Great post ! I love your guide and it is helpful for all newbies.
My point is that since we’re all promoting affiliate programs, why distribute a product where there is any evidence at all of swiping affiliate commissions? Why even get in bed for a second w/ those guys if there is that dark of a cloud.

Even if I only care about myself, how do I know it didn’t overwrite some of my cookies when the user was navigating around my site? I’d rather not trade dollars for dimes.

#520 Comment By Make money On March 13, 2009 @ 9:16 am

If you really don’t want to distribute anything, you could always just change their homepage to include your google search link.
First I was wondering how profitable this would be when compared to using zango(0.45 cents per download) I wonder if it would be even more profitable, especially over time, considering how often users click on ads.

Also I was wondering exactly how you would go about doing this? Is this something you could do with a few lines of code in the install? Or would it be a more involved process? Like making a near exact replica of google’s website and hosting it yourself? Because this idea sounds possibly even more profitable then the first.

Hello Eli,
Great blog! Awsome stuff here.
Something in this comment got me thinking:

“Each page and download you create should pull about a PR4-5 after the software submission.”

Ok, so I know I do not have to put up a website with these screensavers, but lets say you put up a crapy site where these screen savers also could be downloaded.
Lets also say that this crapy site had a PR 0.

Through these software sites …
1. … could one put a link to his screen saver page? (I’ve seen it alot of times like: “Visit creators webpage click her”)
2. … and forward some of that PR4 or 5 from “download.com” to the crapy screensaver page?
3. … if so, how much PR would be forwarded?
4. … if you forwarded or linked to a third page from that crapy screensaver page, how much PR would be forwarded then?

Thanks.

#582 Comment By Teaching How To Make Money Online On July 8, 2010 @ 1:19 am

Blogging is great but it is a big commitment. But the benefits far outweigh the negatives when done correctly. I made my first dollar online years back after reading the bum marketing method and applying Travis Sago’s method. I played with classified ads then moved on to articles etc….

If I had to do it all over again I would of started my email list much sooner, outsourced more, and just concentrate on tasks that actually make you money!

Build that Email list, drive as much traffic to your Blog, or Website as humanly possible. Traffic equals money newbies! Without traffic your business will sink.

Build your email list, drive traffic, and my future goal is to create my own hot selling Clickbank product down the line in the near future. That should be your goal too down the line to create your own product, and build your email list.

2 most important things you can do!
