I Need A Vacation

Posted By Eli On October 31, 2006 @ 5:32 am In Random Thoughts | 74 Comments

Have you ever just gotten completely burned out? Your brain no longer functions. You can’t seem to accomplish the easiest of tasks without a ton of problems thrown in your face. Ever just completely hit a road block? Yet you find yourself with no option but to just trudge through it for another two or three months and hope you’ll find some time to just take a break or a short vacation. What happens when those two or three months pass right by you and you swear you’ll find your break in August or something? Then suddenly it’s November and you’re realizing you haven’t had even a hint of a vacation or any time off in over 3 years. You’ve been post poning and swearing to your haggard brain that it will eventually get a rest and now your wondering if it will ever actually happen.
You see all your friends, with their “real” jobs and their steady biweekly paper checks, lapping you year after year with their vacations; always complaining about how they go by too fast. You just can’t help but think to yourself…..fuck the week my years goes by too fast. I couldn’t imagine how fast a week vacation would go by for me. At this point there would be no advantage to me taking a vacation. I’d blink and end up missing it. Even if I managed to keep my eyes open, I’d still probably end up spending the week worrying about whats going on at the office. Is this is the cell I put myself into by choosing the wonderful world of self employment? American fuckin dream right? At this point I’d be willing to settle for a week working at home alone in my room.
I’d probably get a lot done during that week…

Thanks for putting up with my venting…

I’m still waiting for the days I don’t feel like I need to work 16 hours+.

I know…

I try to stop and smell the flowers more. slow myself down.
Take my time.
Feel like “I have the time - everything is fine !”

If you don’t manage to do that, and it doesn’t matter how much pressure you are under (unless you live in a Nazi camp) - Than you have a real mission sitting under your nose - Slow down, move your body, eat slowly (with some one you love - if possible).

And come back in one year :P

Thanks for the listening.

We all need to vent sometimes. And yeah, I’m guilty of working too many hours too.

Could you write about article submission and the so-called “duplicate content penalty?” I’ve written 6 articles for a white-hat site (to get backlinks and traffic), and after reading about duplicate content, I’m wondering whether I should submit the articles to **one** directory only.

It seems impossible to avoid the “duplicate content penalty” b/c ppl. who create “content sites” (MFA sites) will simply take my articles and republish them on their own websites. Hence more duplicate content.

What’s the truth about article submission, duplicate content, and SEO?

Each year I get one good vacation. My parents take my son for a couple weeks.

This gives me the opportunity to have the house to myself. So I can work!

One year I took two weeks off while he was gone. What did I do? Created a Search Directory…

I know how you feel.

I know what you mean. I have 2 good friends that have been “self employed” for years and I’m working towards that goal myself, which means I’m working 2 jobs and I need an extra 10 hours tacked on to the day. Never enough time.

The key to sanity when you can’t take vacations are frequent short quick releases. Whether it be a one night camping trip or going to a concert or having a crazy strip club night with some friends. Just something significantly different enough to satisfy your mind and break up the routine.

One other thing that may help, I’m sure you already know this but automation is your friend, if you have ANY tasks you perform that are repetitive, then do whatever you can to automate that and take out all the repitition. Even client emails, if you are writing emails with the same format over and over, make a template and fill in the blanks. Anywhere you can save time is invaluable.

P.S. Love the blog, it has really helped me to start thinking outside of the box.

I see what you mean, I left my job as a developer and started to work independently 3 years ago. I did everything people do on the web to earn money.. I started by writing an ebook, trying to promote it, getting knowledge about SEO, then starting to earn money with adwords, etc.
I was earning about $20.000 a year for the last 3 years, but I was working around 14h a day, 7 days a week, with only 2 weeks of holidays : 1 in summer, 1 in winter.
And the difficulty was to stay up-to-date to what’s making money on the web!

Now I have stopped and joined a big company. I stop working at 5.30pm and earn $50.000 a year, with 8 weeks holidays !!!!

But I can’t help myself, every evening I create web sites, try to find how I could make money to be self-employed again :)

I think that to make enough money on the web and have enough free time, you need either to scam people, or to find the most stupid idea (e.g. 1 million dollars pixels)

Hay Aur you just need to keep reading this website and learn some blackhat tricks buddy. You don’t have to scam anyone but you do need to do more then just white hat stuff. That all worked up until a few years ago then google changed the game.

Don’t worry, I am not gonna try to scam anyone , it is just my feeling that many people are earning money on the internet by scamming other people (by the way, if you want, I can sell you a secret e-book that will make you earn $19.457 a day on the internet, with working only 10 minutes a day! If you buy it before tomorrow, I’ll make you a special price of $197.77 !!! But hurry up, because there are less than 10 copies left!!!)

I know exactly what you mean! I’m up at 5:30AM, start doing all my invoices etc. By 9am (right now) I’m reading your blog trying to figure out a plan of attack for my money site. Only problem is I can’t figure out a way to get high rankings without getting my site banned. I’ve had my money site for a couple years now and I don’t want to risk hurting the business I am getting.

Anyway, that was a little off subject. Back to what I was saying….from 9 to about 9pm (about 19 hours a day) I’m doing something work related. After hearing my girlfriend bitch I decide to watch some TV lol. Next day I’m ready to do it again. Shit even on the weekends I feel like I need to get up early.

Last year I went to the outer banks for a week and spent most of my time on my damn laptop, just reading and researching.

I want to commend you for helping all of us out and for providing a place to exchange ideas with like minded people. Thanks again everyone!

I know exactly what you mean with burn out!

Working day after day, week after week, month after month can not only lower your efficiancy, but result in illness as well.

Taking vacations on regular basis is therefore cruical!

This post is pretty old, but still, hope you enjoyed your holidays in this year too : )

I too have been at this IM thing for one year plus, and am putting in significant hours with sporadic paydays. But, I am pursuing my dream and am still confident that dream will be a reality very soon. Many people quit right before they reach the top of the mountain and never realize they were inches from getting over the top and letting that momentum carry them down that hill to success and happiness. I have found a common thread of successful people to emulate in a specific type of business model that I believe to be one of the most effective and lasting ways to become successful as your own boss. Best of luck to all who read this. Bill
