Keyword Real Estate

Posted By Eli On April 24, 2007 @ 10:43 pm In General Articles | 261 Comments

Hey guys and gals. Incase you didn’t notice I took a short break from posting to catch up on some work. Thanks for hanging out. :) Let’s review. In my [1] SERP Domination post I spilled the beans about creating a site network by breaking down a larger site to take down the competition in a very efficient manner. This of course works beautifully in reverse, but we’ll save that for another day. In the mean time though I want to touch on a small portion of that post I could of easily divulged a hell of a lot more on. I’m talking about the “secondary network.” Incase you have short term memory loss I’ll refresh ya with a quote from the post.
Blah blah blah, sexist joke. Blah blah snarky remark. I’ll create a much larger secondary network to help boost my blah blah inbound link authority. Blah blah ramble ramble.
In words longer than short I introduced the well proven concept of Keyword Real Estate. Keyword Real Estate isn’t just a concept its a practice. In fact scratch that. Keyword Real Estate is the law of high rankings just as sure as Murphy’s law will make your servers go down between 1-3am instead of 9-5pm. Practicing good keyword real estate snatching will help boost your sites. I will go as far as to say that it is unwise to enter any niche no matter how uncompetitive without grabbing up as much real estate related to your terms as possible. I’ll explain.

Domains, Free Hosting, Blog Networks, Social Networks, Social Bookmarking, URL Shorteners. The list goes on and on. Any where there is an authoritative domain that allows you to own a static page there is no reason why you shouldn’t register it and put up a landing page advertising your site(s), or even a simple link if that’s all that is possible. I’ll explain this in a simplistic white hat way using an analogy because this is in no gray or black hat about it, its just common sense business.

Imagine you live in a big city and you setup a small business. The local phone book directories want you to pay them to put a small business card sized ad in the yellowpages/category/keyword/page/adspot. Okay so it fits within your ROI so you do it. It’s almost manditory for a small business to be found by it’s customers. However, at the same time, all over the city there are these giant sky scrapers with all these blank billboards on them. They are giving them out for free all you got to do is claim them first before your competitors do and you can put up any ad for your business you want within reason(TOS). Also, in other portions of this fictional city are little chunks of land that you can grab and put up a giant sign with a big ass arrow pointing to your business. They may not be in the primo business districts but they at least get drive by traffic. I don’t know about you but I’m too ethical of a business owner to take advantage. :)

Ya know on second thought, I think I will jump in on this offer. So let’s look at a few examples of these billboards and opportunities for Keyword Real Estate and where to easily find them. They are everywhere.

A few examples might include:

keyword.Wordpress.com
keyword.blogspot.com
keyword.blogger.com
del.icio.us/keyword
borntobuzz.com/keyword
digg.com/users/keyword
technorati.com/profile/keyword
bloglines.com/blog/keyword
keyword.typepad.com
astore.amazon.com/keyword-20
myspace.com/keyword
squidoo.com/keyword
keyword.spaces.live.com
someforum.com/members/keyword.html <-vbulletin with vbseo installed & your link in the signature.
I know it’s simple and not very advanced advice, but it’s solid.  Look at what the experts are doing. A great example of how well this works is of course SEO Contests. How are they won? In the simple sense they are won by Keyword Real Estate. They are also a great resource for finding some awesome opportunities. After all it works damn well. I personally never enter a competitive niche without grabbing as much real estate as possible on that keyword or phrase and using it to boost my sites’ rankings and traffic. It’s common sense, all you got to do is follow through religiously.

Another great tip. It was really worht to wait a bit :)

#2 Comment By Gerard McGarry On April 25, 2007 @ 1:03 am

Good post. I read something similar about a year ago and it makes perfect sense. Takes a lot of drudgery setting up the accounts in the first place though!

#3 Comment By LikeButta On April 25, 2007 @ 1:06 am

So true. Graywolf has [2] a post I just recently came across touching on the same subject.

This is sound strategy and a good foundation for reputation management (at least serp wise).

You see this happen multiple times inadvertently. Social media or news publicity will drive a targeted page to the front page for it’s terms. Along side it will be 2-5 pages referencing that very page. If you add a couple of your “free billboards” you have the potential to control the serps for that term.

Graywolf gave some good advice in that you should do some regular maintenance (a link or two, add content, etc) on these sites to keep them nice and healthy.

Thanks!

#5 Comment By Jon Waraas On April 25, 2007 @ 4:13 am

Should you market the “keyword real estate” sites to help the weight at all? Or just let the spiders do there thing themselves?

#6 Comment By Tyler On April 25, 2007 @ 5:51 am

I think you have been implying this for a while now. You just finally came out and said it up front.

So to utilize this, I would presume you create a wordpress blog, then only link to a few sites in your network. At the same time you get a few easy links from outside so that the blog can get a slight bit of interest.

#7 Comment By Doug On April 25, 2007 @ 5:52 am

Found your site from SEO book a few weeks ago. Read through your archives. Awesome. Hope you continue posting with frequency.

#8 Comment By Tyler On April 25, 2007 @ 6:03 am

My question was basically the exact same as Jon Waraas’.

When you are targeting a keyword with this networked approach, how tight of circles do you make? Lets use appliances as an example niche. Would you make a site about refrigerators, one on microwaves, ovens, ranges, blenders, etc. Or would you make one on refrigerators, one on refrigeration techniques, one on history of refrigeration, one on cleaning refrigerators, refrigerator repair, etc?

#9 Comment By Markus On April 25, 2007 @ 8:02 am

What is your linking strategy for these? Do you interlink them all or is there a specific pattern to maximize link juice? Do you vary the anchor text or do you concentrate on the keyterm?

Also, how do you get both a blogger and blogspot account? I only see blogspot as the domain option when I create a new one.

#10 Comment By Barman On April 25, 2007 @ 8:32 am

I love your blog bro. I never read it before because your posts are too long… but then I got wise and now I’m rethinking my marketing strategies because of what you’ve put out there. Keep it up.

#11 Comment By Phoenix Arizona SEO On April 25, 2007 @ 9:58 am

I’m probably a complete idiot but I didn’t get the second to last paragraph about finding keyword real estate.

keyword.Wordpress.com
keyword.blogspot.com
keyword.blogger.com
del.icio.us/keyword
borntobuzz.com/keyword
digg.com/users/keyword
technorati.com/profile/keyword
bloglines.com/blog/keyword
keyword.typepad.com
astore.amazon.com/keyword-20
myspace.com/keyword
squidoo.com/keyword
keyword.spaces.live.com

I’m not sure what we are supposed to with these resources.

Here’s what I came up with but correct me if I’m wrong or missing something.

1. Create blogs that are keyword rich and have back links to the desired site.

Anything else?

#12 Comment By Ryan On April 25, 2007 @ 10:19 am

Thanks for another great post Eli. The techniques you post are great, and the ideas I get from them are even better.

I just wanted to add that these opportunities are everywhere. One that I recently discovered (and haven’t used much, thus giving it away here) is eteamz.active.com. They have a pretty authoritative domain but apparently no one monitoring the spam.

Check out a Google search for:

site:active.com +cialis
site:active.com +viagra
site:active.com +loans

All those pages also accept javascript for sneaky redirects, etc. Just paste in some text and add your links.

#13 Comment By Neil Galloway On April 25, 2007 @ 10:30 am

Wow, that is definitely squeeking out the SEO points with this technique. Interesting article.

FYI: If you take too long to submit the comment, the math problem, must change in behind the scenes. I had to do it again.

#14 Comment By Dave On April 25, 2007 @ 10:41 am

Very interesting, something I have been starting to do from scratch with my newer sites before I start any regular linking processes, just to test the waters. I’m compiling my own massive list of “authority” domains that allow a free page.

What is your opinion, if you are going for a 2 word phrase? Lets take “Dog Training”. When signing up for accounts do you feel it is better to go for “dogtraining” or use the dash “dog-training”. I’m still in debate on how the engines read this, can they actually figure to separate the words/phrase I’m trying to rank for? I know the best answer would be to make pages with both options but just looking for any expert opinions.

Great blog, I like the outside the box thinking in your posts, keep it up!

#15 Comment By Edwin On April 25, 2007 @ 11:23 am

I got that the last post you made and also the network thing became clear.

I tried it and all I can say “THANKS for putting the light on”

Before I was thinking in terms of where to submit and I hope they will accept my site. Now I think in terms where is a place with some authority to get a blog/page so I can link to my sites.

#16 Comment By Mark On April 25, 2007 @ 3:20 pm

This has always worked well for me. If you’re going to start using sigs in forums, make sure you can see the sigs when you’re not logged in - or the search engines won’t be able to see them! Digital Point is a pretty good domain to get links from, they allow hyperlinked sigs. Unfortunately, it’s an incredibly noise/fluff filled forum..

Thanks for the list, Eli :)

#17 Comment By KeywordDonkey On April 26, 2007 @ 6:43 am

Thanks Eli, a lot of questions, but that doesn’t hold me back?

Assuming that you did a proper job with your keyword research, you have 50 000 keyword phrases that are used by searchers regularly and you have decided to target 2000 of the keyword phrases because they fit your target best.

You list 13 sites where you can get you keyword real estate for free in authority sites. If you target all 2000 of prime keyword phrases, in the 13 mother sites, you will have 26 000 sites pointing to your web site.

1. Is 26 000 sites too many?
2. Is it preferable to organize the new sites in themes, so they target ex. 20 keywords phrases each?
3. How much user value do you put in the sites?
4. How do you choose between number of sites and value for users?

Eli, I like to hear about your exit strategies, please.

#18 Comment By Eli On April 26, 2007 @ 9:27 pm

Thanks for posting a link to that article. He did a very good job of explaining it and had some good info over there.

#19 Comment By Eli On April 26, 2007 @ 9:50 pm

Very good question. You can it two ways. You can either just get them indexed with a link or two or you can build them up through nonrelevant links and use the those links to push your money sites higher. I actually wrote a detailed post on it called Synergy links.
[3] http://www.bluehatseo.com/blue-hat-technique-9-synergy-links/

So I guess it depends on what kind of volume your looking at and your desperation for links. By all means be hardcore about it and build them up, it can’t hurt but the reality is it’s not required.

Thanks for the question, this concept was going to be included in a future post here.

#20 Comment By Eli On April 26, 2007 @ 10:09 pm

nice!

#21 Comment By Eli On April 26, 2007 @ 10:10 pm

True, that is a problem. Some people like creating an account. Once you login you don’t have to go through all the BS like the regular users. :)

#22 Comment By Eli On April 26, 2007 @ 10:16 pm

1. no amount of links is too big. You just got match your competition. If the top 10 averages only about 10k there’s no real reason to keep building, its just going to draw unwanted attention. but you are definitely right.

2. yes definitely.

3. as much as possible, but that in no way means a writer excels in this area. One of the best “user values you can put” is a viral tool for your niche. I’m sure eventually there will be a post about this, but if you can create a tool that the people in the niche will want to use either daily or it promotes your site in the process, that is ideal. Sometimes it’s apparent that the coders always win :)

4. I choose the number based upon the needs obviously, as far as splitting up of the content, I split as little as possible. Each site does after all need to be able to qualify for the top 10. A little 5-10 page site probably isn’t going to cut it in a competitive niche.

Exit strategies? I don’t know failure, only trial and error. :)

#23 Comment By Eli On April 26, 2007 @ 10:40 pm

Thanks so much for this comment. It was really inspiring and made me see the fruits of my efforts starting to grow. Almost every technique on this blog is connected and interweaves to an ultimate versatile strategy. The industry has just put up too thick of a screen of lies and corporate propaganda bullshit to let it come through. I think the light bulbs are finally starting to flicker around here. I’m learning more and more everyday about people who are really starting to get it and understand. It’s like that great part of a movie where everything comes together and previous inconsistencies start to make perfect sense. I love it. Gurus be damned, some true pros are going to come out of this place I can tell. :)

#24 Comment By Eli On April 26, 2007 @ 10:44 pm

To put it simply. Whenever you enter a niche(eg dog collars) try to grab and register accounts on authority domains that are your primary keywords. for instance check to see if dogcollars.wordpress.com exists. If it doesn’t register it and put up a small blog on the subject and link to and recommend checking out your primary site. The list I put up is just a list of static authority domains that allow you to do this. There are many more, but the basic technique concerns finding as many as possible the moment you enter a niche and try to snag them all (kind of like prime real estate) and using them to help your primary money sites rank.

Did that clear it up a bit?

#25 Comment By Boliga On May 1, 2007 @ 4:22 am

Thanks for another great post Eli.

I snatched up the danish word for condo on squidoo, and already the day after its in google and ranking #6 on page 1 when I search for that term(in the english search, not the danish). Only thing that makes me sad is that it is ranking way higher than our own real estate site :)

#26 Comment By Romit On June 25, 2007 @ 6:32 am

Eli i love you for this post and for all your posts!! first off, “thanks”! :)

i had a question though…

as we can have multiple ‘keyword’ static pages on all of these authority sites… it never hurts to have similar keywords pages.

but, suppose my main keyword is ‘dog’ so its obvious that i’d be grabbing something like ‘dog-info’ etc. as dog.domain.com wouldn’t be available.

in that case… whats your suggestion.. would something like “dog1″ or “d-o-g” or “dog-” etc worth having?

#27 Comment By Guille On July 23, 2007 @ 1:19 am

(sorry about my English)

I thought that if you get keyword.blogspot.com linking to you will get no value because it will be treated as a complete different domain.

So getting a link from keyword.blogspot.com would be the same of getting a link from keyword.noauthority.com

So somethings wrong here, or not?

#28 Comment By madsj On November 15, 2007 @ 1:00 am

My niche is Mac Gadgets - SSD solid state hard disks, Apple TV tuners, OSX Web Cameras, Computer Speakers, Best Macintosh Peripherals, Gizmos, Upgrades and such. And I’ve taken my identity MacGizmoGuy - and done as BlueHat recommends with great success.

Here is a killer resource : [4] http://knowem.com/

This site shows where you have registered (and SHOULD!) stake out your identity or keyword-name across literally 100 top sites in the Social 2.0 landscape. I’ve made it a challenge to stake turf on as many as possible - and take the time to build a FULL PROFILE at each whenever possible too .

I think the main point you brought up is “religiously”. Most internet marketers know what they have to do to increase their rankings but the hard part is to do it everyday with the same strict effort and consistency.

I noticed a dramatic decrease in our Alexa rankings when I slowed my SEO efforts for our real estate virtual tour company. Once I resumed SEO efforts again, they began to increase again with a couple weeks - is this common?

#91 Comment By vibram On August 8, 2010 @ 11:41 pm

I my opinion,if possible, choose a longer form of a keyword phrase that also contains the shorter version. For example, if you use “Brooklyn real estate agent”, you are also covering the shorter phrase “Brooklyn real estate”. This way you can use the shorter and more popular search phrase as many times as possible in your web site while still covering the less competitive longer phrase.

As far as good keywords go, it still is not that hard to get good ones and use them in as many sites as possible. The internet, even though it is massive, is still in its infancy. Imagine what grabbing up “real estate” now will do for you in 10 years.

Hi Elect,
I would like to inform you important SEO tips from a newbie.
Here are some SEO tips which I found quite useful by reading lots of SEO sites. Hopes it helps who reads them

File name keyword-Use keywords like keywords in file names like gaming_computers_with_themed_lookout.html for saving a file instead of like computer.html which includes details about computer which comes with theme of games painted on them like WOW themed computer or keyboards etc.

Position of links-As we knows SE crawl pages through codes, so the links at the top of the webpage will have more value.

alt tag images-Always use alt tag for images as it helps with SE which index images. It will help ppl to find your pages even when they are searching for specific images with certain info.

Real Estate is my main niche. Everyone’s area will have different norms, but the real converters supervised me. It’s not always city + real estate that converts the best even though that is usually the term for your largest city that will get the most traffic. Smaller cities will not work the same way however in my experience. Honestly, I set aside about $600 for adwords and the data I got there was worth running the campaigns. I tried every kw I WOULD SEARCH. Intuition showed me my kw’s converted better than the keywords tool showed. Be smart and trust your gut.

More important than that however is having a mechanism to convert surfers into leads. That is even more important than targeting your kw’s because if you’re not showing homes right away and getting registrations, you don’t know what % of traffic converts and what kw’s are more valuable to invest in. The best in my area have not been obvious, but most of the Realtor in my area pick wrong… thankfully
