So after all this BS from Google, automatic link exchanges still have value after all. IF you think about it many software directories give out thousands of links and they never lose PR either so I have ot agree with your theory and keep up the good work Eli.

I’ve often wondered about the site-wide links issue. It always seemed to me a bit simplistic to say ’sitewide links are bad’.

I’d be interested to know your thoughts on the impact sitewide links would have on the other outbound links from the host site - would it decrease their value massively?

Now the confusing part. An example of no outbound links that’s an authority site: wikipedia.

Your competitor also appears to be running an affiliate program which is a nice way to collect on-topic inbounds (assuming the aff program uses clean links and doesn’t redirect thru a middleman like CJ). A side benefit of the affiliate program is that he can also explain away some potentially nefarious linking activity by blaming it on “rogue affiliates” (assuming he ever gets called out).

You are right. I have the same problem (challenge ) as him; almost all the competition in the niche iam in uses affiliate marketing. Because of all those links they rank higher. Its weird google doesn’t recognize affiliate links, but I’ll try being my own affiliate with all the tips from Eli

Great explanation of a topic many people have problems with. The only caveat I would add is to be aware there are other factors involved and overuse of any one method could cause you problems.

We’ve also had good luck using sitewide links on properties we’re cross promoting, we try and blend the links into the content so they’re not overt if a competitor comes sniffing with a spam report but basically, dropping sw links is what we’re doing.

Wondered how you’re finding this tactic work on properties you don’t own. I’m hesitant to use a site that’s hosted them in the past, feel the footprints they leave are telling and devalue their potential.

Have you found this to be the case and if so, how do you evaluate a site you don’t own as a possible spot to host sw links?

After starting to read your blog I went ahead and created a contend/scraper and rewriter. This bot is constantly generating completely unique human readable articles(about 95% pass the human quality control test). It is generating articles at a rate of about 4000 per day.

I also build an easily site creation tool. Simply select articles I wish to include, select a template and press create. It automatically creates the site on my domain of choice.

THe problem is I dont have the time to keep up with the bot. It is generating more articles than I can select and create sites with. SO the question:
1. Continue selecting articles about certain niches and creating sites with them when I get the time.
2. PUt the entire program on autopilot. Let it automatically randomly select 10000 articles for a site and build it. This would create sites that are not about any certain niche but be capable of mass site creation.

Which do you think is better??
Now I need to build an upward linking script!!

OK, so what you are saying is that putting (selling) outbound sitewide links on your site will not diminish its value. AND that receiving sitewide links will also not diminish your site’s value.

That seems to be counterintuitive to what I belive. I have been of the mindset to stay away from sitewide links because they tend to get you penalized more easily. Now I know for a fact (from experience at an old employer) that too many inbound links at the same time from a sitewide can and will penalize you.

I would love to hear more from you on this and swap stories!

Actually I never said there is no value drop for giving a sitewide link. I just said it wasn’t as much of a drop as the value that it gives. There is a consequence for placing a sitewide link. Although that consequence could be large to none at all. It’s just never greater than the benefit the other sites recieves. Also following the rule that no inbound link can hurt you no sitewide link can hurt you. There used to be a sandbox but that wasn’t necessarily a penalty for too many links, it was just a time buffer to test your site’s quality out. There is definitely no penalty that I’ve ever seen from too many links at once to a quality site.

To list an extreme example. I just recently this year got a sitewide link on collegehumor (2m+ links within two weeks) to a brand new site and it was a huge benefit. Never a penalty.

We really should start a campaign to get Wordpress to be Do-Follow by default. So many people start blogging without even knowing that they are a no-follow blog. I mean this should be a choice and not on by default.

I have not only added the Do-Follow plugin but also Keyword Luv and Comment Luv. My commentators should love me off lol.

You mentioned cross linking sites with 100k pages. I assume these are sites created by scripts.

I run a few hand written sites, which are well regarded by Google (all at page one). The sites have between 200-300 pages.

Do you think it would benefit me if I placed sitewide links at these sites pointing to another site that I want to promote?

Two points here: first, 100k anchor texts can have an effect much larger than 300 pages; second, you can risk loosing an auto generated site, but you can’t do the same with a 300 page site.

Hey Eli … thanks for the post, I’ve been in the game for years and was under the “law of diminishing values” misconception you were referring to.

Since we’re talking about the value of site wide links, I’ve got a quick question I’ve always wondered about and never had the chance to test as there are a ton of variables (no control) when dealing with site wide links.

Would site wide links be considered site wide links if the link and anchor text change on every page?

For example, say you have 2 db driven sites, 1 centered around doctors from every state and city in USA. Another site sells cars and also has a page for every state/city in US. Thanks to a little php, you can strip the city/st from the url and rewrite the url & anchor text for each link so no 2 links are identical.

Is this beneficial? Do search engines still recognize this as a site wide link since they are all going to the same domain? Is this better at preventing spammy anchor text than just randomizing the words?

1. Is it wise to put like 5 sitewide links pointing to 5 important internal pages of another site or would it be better and more profitable to put links to 5 different domains?

The Law of Diminishing Values makes perfect sense though, and I like the example with car blogs.

I’m curious about if you have multiple sites that are being hosted on the same server, but on different domains. For instance, with your lyrics site, would those links count for much if the SE knows that both sites are on the same server, and even if they have the same WHOIS data?

Another question for the lyric site example. Aren’t reciprocal links worth very little now? So would you see much effect from that?

This is a very enlightening post. It got me thinking, and maybe you already answered it in the post but I couldn’t get it in these terms - but what about targeted linking from non-relevant sites?

For Example:
Site A is a software directory and Site B is a lyric directory. Site A and Site B each have 100k+ subpages. If Site A had 1k+ pages of “lyric software” subpages and Site B had no subpages related to software, then would the total effect of inbound links to Site B from Site A be greater than Site B’s links to Site A?

I am in the camp that both internal and external links are vital to increasing placements and part of that is the ability for search engine to decipher true links from manufactured links. Its just to what level does Google go to determine that line. As an seo services company, we always get asked to what the future is in SEO. In my mind, it is Latent Semantic Indexing and how sites will need to embrace these notions when constructing their category taxonomies. What an interesting space!

Link building is the hardest fight in SEO. It is hard to find good quality sites with same topic ready to link to you. But it is worthy.

I recently shut off my nofollow on comments to test this. It seems a lot of major SEO experts are starting to backtrack on the outbound links sucking link juice theory. Of course, since I’ve shut off no follow I’ve had to deal with a little bit more moderation. But, I’m hoping in the long run it helps more than it hurts.

This is some good stuff. Links are what build up the web and some would say that outbound links hurt your site. This is partly true. If you are a new site and link to an authority in your niche it will do you some good over just linking out to anyone.

If I’m working to get a smaller site initially indexed, I’ve noticed that some of the SEs favor the URLs that have outbound links to high PR pages. These get indexed first - but they don’t necessarily get higher PR or SERPs themselves.

Anyway, about dofollow, I run all my blogs and Pligg sites with nofollow disabled and I have no complaints about traffic or revenue… The key I’ve seen is just to not link to any penalized sites or ‘bad neighborhoods.’

Very interesting thinking, definitely a bit outside the box of accepted knowledge. I’ve always bought in to the net plus / net minus value of links on a site, based on something from Matt Cutts I got in the past. It would make sense though for relevant outbound links to provide value, after all… content is king. And worthwhile outbound links provide value to site visitors as valuable content. I’m going on the “a link is a link is a link” theory that all links provide some effect, however, would this link be more effective if my site was about ’seo’?

So true, nice to see people making blog posts that are actually correct, there is no such thing as dilution as long as the link is not to a bad neighborhood, a perfect example of this would be pr5 to pr8 directories that have thousands of outbound links.

The main reason why outbound links are less important is that it is easy to do and cheaper. You can just submit your site to most high-PR websites and you think you’re on? definitely there are still a lot of polishing and 20 outbound links were just comparable to 1 inbound link.

Outbound links does make a post more useful, it also makes a boring post more interesting.

I think it’s a shame that Google has such a masive impact on sites traffic and the algo is so secret and dyamic that webmasters etc have to spend a lot of time doing stuff just to get higher rank. I’m not blaming them, they have to do it.

If sites were rewarded for being useful then the web would be better because all this energy could actually be spent on making sites more usable or useful or pretty or cool.

Interesting article! I always thought that have outbound links hurt a page when it comes to rankings. This is why on my static sites I use nofollow on all pages the are irrelevant such as about me page and contact us etc.

I always thought massively interlinking your sites was a bad thing. I have about 6 websites in the same niche but don’t link any of them as I always thought it would be bad (they are on the same server)

Based on this topic, if I were to sitewide link to them all I would see a massive boost in rankings.

So what do I do?

1. Link them all up
2. Link only certain ones
3. Move them all to separate servers then link them
4. Something else?

I would really appreciate an accurate answer on this

Google can see affiliated sites with site wide links like a footer link. They discount the link juice value of those links since they know its the same person linking to themselves. Unless you get very tricky with registrations, hosting, etc… It is hard to not get those site wide links discounted.

WOW, it is so nice to hear an expert say that do-follow comments DO NOT affect your rankings, there are so much misinformed and completely moronic notions flying around on this subject, and I always laugh when I hear them from those that don’t have a clue.

Linking has always been an issue. Will you get slapped or blessed by Big G? The last I heard was outbound authority links are good because they provide content to the reader and that is one of the big criteria Google uses.

I prefer linking only to the sites that I trust and I consider authority sites. You may confuse your readers if you have irrelevant links on your site.

Outbound links to respected sites in particular seem to be very effective in getting Google’s attention.

I’m learning different SEO Tactics almost a year now. I’ve been diving deeper into SEO and your blog provides some great info - very much appreciated. Absolutely an amazing article. I’ve been looking around to see specifically this answer. I thought for awhile now that nofollow isn’t a good practice to use.

I think I am understanding what you are saying.

The problem I am having is finding a method whereby people will link with my site because of its content, and not because of any internal or external benefit of the link itself.

That is, if I understand the pure purpose of linking to a site to begin with, it is to have readily available articles or data that are valuable to one’s business, hobby or family.

For example, if I am a dentist, I might want to link my site to a dental technique research site, not with the thought of increasing or decreasing my search engine ranking, but rather to make sure I stay current with my profession.

So, the big reference sites get a lot of that kind of love.

It is the guy who is attempting to market something that is being marketing by tens of thousands or perhaps millions of people who has the problem of encouraging others to take the time and make the effort to link to his or her site.

Why would they do it?

As a matter of fact, I think the data shows that people won’t do it unless there is real informational value on a site OR, there is cross linking going on by agreement having nothing to do with the value of the sites involved themselves.

For me, that kind of technique has the potential of undermining the purpose of a search engine to begin with. That is, a search engine needs to have the goal of bringing to the public’s attention the sites best able to answer a question or solve a problem for a consumer.

If the search engine is duped by cross linking having nothing to do with the intrinsic value of a site, how is that good for the consumer?

On the other hand, we might make an assumption that the sites with the most links, regardless of how they came to be, is the best for the public.

I find that to be a difficult proposition to accept.

However, it may be true. I just don’t know.

I wanted to comment about your question you answered regarding 2 sites with each are pointing to each other. I see this kind of marketing all the time… Especially lawyer sites… A lawyer gets one website with his own domain johnsmithlawyer.xyz for example and then he starts another site with the keywords in it minneapolisaccidentlawyer.xyz and then he pounds links between them… It works like a dream… you see both sites on page#1 and a backlink check reveals most of the inbound links come from the other site…it is used all the time…

Great article for one of the fundamentals of SEO.

Great article on seo. There are many misconceptions about seo and internet marketing and you have explained a few of them to be untrue on your post.

Setting up two sites with appropriate domain names and setting up multiple links between the two can work short term, but adding more and more reciprocal links between the two will eventually be picked up by the bots, especially if they’re on the same ip, but eventually, even if they’re not.
We had one “competitor” who used this technique qith a promise to “pay us when you’re on page 1″, which happened. The client paid up happily, then two or three months down the line, they were blacklisted by Google.
We then went in, at the request of the local BusinessLink, contacted by the client in panic, to clean up the mess and sort it out long term with white hat SEO.
All I’m saying is, best be cautious with this technique.

Stumbled across this post. How old is this post? FOr most businesses it’s better to target long term profit and many techniques described are most likely to be devalued by Google in the near future or already have been devalued.

Currently Google pays much more attention to authority of the link, not to the number of links.

My internal links for my site was at 510 and recently dropped to 107. While my Indexed Pages does say 530 (in webmaster tools).

I don’t know that I would say it has too much of a diminished value. It seems that it has remained fairly static, it’s just that other factors are so much more important. I would never not have some relevant outbound links.

I also wanted to add that if you are wanting to add useful links on your site for visitors and not necessarily additions for ranking or authority I would definitely nofollow those bad boys.

I have heard that if a site links to a related site that is considered an authority source of information it can actually enhance that site in the search engine. So there may be exceptions to this rule of every action having a conesequence.

The value of outbound links has long been gone. Inbound links is the one that SEO needs and that’s what optimizers want.

I was aware from Red, black and white hat SEO ..good to know more about blue hat ..good job keep it up.

It has kind of runied internet marketing when you see people just stealing your back links and ruining them so your actual backlink disappers. I’m still trying to figure out the whole backlinks and inbound and outbound thing. It seems like the weight of things with Google rankings changes so rapidly that posts on the topic that are actually relevant are difficult to find. Thanks for the info! Werd.

Figuring out the backlinks……follow….nofollow…is just a pain in the butt. The worst part is that once you figure out a decent gameplan, Google busts out a totally new algorithm to change the game.

Yes, Google is not really diminishing value for outgoing links.

I only know one way for sure. A couple times in my life, I’ve been selected by mail to keep track of what programs my family watches by writing the names and times down in a little booklet they’ve sent, and sending it back to them with pre-postage paid envelopes.
