Stumble and Digg Begging

Posted By Eli On September 9, 2008 @ 11:25 pm In Neat Tricks and Hacks | 406 Comments

Haven’t done a [1] Neat Tricks and Hacks in awhile. Here’s one to remind DIGG and Stumbleupon users to up your shit.

PHP

PERL

*PERL code is untested, I just translated it off the top of my head. Probably made a mistake or two… I always do. Am I the only CGIer left in this world?

Javascript

I just started testing this method today, so I couldn’t tell you how well it works yet. I’m going to start with Stumbleupon because I’m willing to wager I’ll have better results with them than the Digg crowd but who knows? Let me know how it works for you in the comments. :)

#1 Comment By Eli On September 9, 2008 @ 11:46 pm

My suggestion is to put this code in your site’s footer. That way the page can load before they see the box. This way they’ll want to click the OK button to move on but the thought of leaving a stumblereview or a digg is on their mind.

#2 Comment By Adam Dempsey On September 10, 2008 @ 1:26 am

I would prefer to use a div near the top of the page containing the message rather than an alert as I’m sure a lot of users would find that annoying!

#3 Comment By Duane On September 10, 2008 @ 2:23 am

I’ve been using this for around a year, it works wonders, especially with stumbleupon.

Cheers,

Duane.

#4 Comment By Jason On September 10, 2008 @ 4:32 am

All though some people may find it annoying, others will think it is cool that you are “a part” of their community.

#5 Comment By Reid On September 10, 2008 @ 5:17 am

An intresting post after quite some time. Eli, Are you trying to rank high for “Music” ? The site footer says so.

#6 Comment By m On September 10, 2008 @ 6:10 am

:: Am I the only CGIer left in this world?
No

#7 Comment By Shark SEO On September 10, 2008 @ 7:23 am

Nice one Eli, it’s a good idea - out of interest, why is it $sites[’stumbleupon’] instead of $sites[’stumbleupon.com’] (considering the code uses ‘digg.com’ instead of ‘digg’) - I feel like I’m missing something incredibly obvious.

#8 Comment By easy job search On September 10, 2008 @ 9:04 am

well well a post from eli out of the blue and after a long time.

Seen some sites using it and always scares the crap out of me.Hey are u tracking me?
Just kidding :-)

As you say stumbleupon brings some traffic love but depends on the website content though for digg users, I believe.

More posts eli, more posts.

#9 Comment By Marty Martin On September 10, 2008 @ 10:00 am

I’ve used this method before for usability and greeting users from particular search engines (a la google) with their exact search phrase on the page. Helped with conversions.

#10 Comment By Edgar On September 10, 2008 @ 10:51 am

Thanks Eli, I too wish you could post more because it’s always so interesting!

#11 Comment By Municipal bond investing - tax free municipal bonds On September 10, 2008 @ 10:53 am

Ah, thanks for the Stumbleupon code. I have been trying to get some type of Digg/Stumble links at the bottom on my comment bar.

#12 Comment By yaph On September 10, 2008 @ 11:55 am

Use ne instead of != for string comparisons in Perl.

There is also a simple WP plugin for you lazies.

#14 Comment By Quality Nonsense On September 10, 2008 @ 3:11 pm

Been using OpenX to do the same thing (as well as the Increse Sociability plugin) and seen some pretty damn impressive results with Stumble Upon (but not Digg or Reddit) across a few sites.

#15 Comment By M.Farouk On September 11, 2008 @ 4:07 am

Thanks man really liked this code in my blog.

#16 Comment By Sid Savara On September 11, 2008 @ 12:23 pm

I recommend doing it with JS instead of with PHP code, so that when you do get dugg you don’t have that PHP code executing for each user.

WP Greet Box is a great plugin which does just that =)

#17 Comment By Cash Leveraging System On September 12, 2008 @ 11:11 am

Thanks for the post… I had a similar script setup for my ’stumblers’ but I never though of Digg. (Or other social bookmarking traffic, for that matter) Pimpin’.

Eli,

Another awesome post. I’d like to give it a try and see what happens.

If you are looking for another fun thing to make in the future… how about a CSS split tester? Serves up different CSS to different users and sees which converts better?

Thanks, Brad

#20 Comment By Seneschall On September 14, 2008 @ 11:44 am

Great to see you back posting, I’ll test it on a few sites, sounds like an awesome idea.

#21 Comment By Atlanta PC Repair Guy On September 14, 2008 @ 4:21 pm

You’re probably right, the Stumble crowd will be much more likely to be receptive. It really depends on the quality of your traffic, more tech savvy crowd would probably perform pretty well with Diggs.

#76 Comment By Georgyone On October 24, 2008 @ 12:13 pm

To start using this tool,
1st.- it’s only for stumbleupon?
2.- Can I use it in other sites?
3.- To use it, just insert the Javascript code in the page?
3.- Do I have to use any additional code for it?
4.- How does it work?
Sorry but I’m “really” new and that’s why I prefer the Javascript instead of php which I haven’t learnt it yet.
Thank you very much for your kind reply
G.

I will be very interested to see your results from this addition to word press. I KNOW that it would annoy the hell out of me but I also know that if I really want to see what’s on the page then I do click through. Will be interested to see how it affects repeat traffic as well. Will be giving it a go. Thanks.

#94 Comment By Blake On November 20, 2008 @ 12:28 pm

FYI This sucks. Don’t do it. Results are decidedly negative as led to all bad reviews from users pissed that a pop up window would intrude on their browsing session to ask for a good review.

#110 Comment By Forklift Licence Melbourne On January 13, 2009 @ 7:30 pm

I like the idea of knocking out the internal links on the Wiki. From my view you really need to be in the top couple of positions for your keyword to justify the effort here, as other wise you are just pushing yourself and all other above you up a place……which if you are down in postion 10-20ish serves little point.

#133 Comment By nickg On February 20, 2009 @ 10:39 pm

Pity the newbs… :)

Try this instead:

you can compare where a user has been to a list of urls and determine if they have visited any by using one of the oldest security holes in web browsers. This has been on the bug list of mozilla since 2003.

use javascript to create an iframe and insert a bunch of links into it (like links to digg and stumble), then use getComputedStyle() to access the style property of each link. visited links will have a different color than unvisited links. compare colors to determine where a user has been.

if you don’t get what i’m talking about or you want to cut to a prepackaged version of this method,
the latest itteration is here:
