That is exactly the world I come from.
High content sites, all whitehat, think web portals, libraries, etc.
These are strange beasts to optimize.
Here, however it is a lot about on-page optimization.
First, tick off all the technical problems that plague a lot of sites.
- Does the site work? Check on mobile
- How fast is it?
- Do all links work?
- Is there an internal search for the user?
etc..
Look at your markup. Is the code clean? Easy to upgrade? Up to date? Small?
Look at information architecture and usability.
If all this is to your liking, look at outreach.
While really huge sites often generate links on their own due to their weight and authority, it is good practice to do some of your won work.
Do you have:
Facebook? Google+? Twitter? etc etc etc
Do you have a strategy using them?
How often do you post? What kind of messsages are you sending out?
Do you have partners providing content?
Are they linking to you? Are you linking to them?
Do you produce content that is shared off-site?
Newspapers, etc...
Is that content accessible via the site, too?
Is OLD content readily accessible?
How do you tie in old content with the new stuff?
These are, sadly, just a list of random optimizations to throw at big sites.
Main thing is, these beasts have to be looked at in - depth on an individual basis.
