User Contributed - Making big $$$ with Links

Posted By Eli On July 31, 2007 @ 1:07 am In User Contributed | 157 Comments

Here is a contributed post by [1] Recommend-It plugin for me awhile back.

Making big $$$ with Links
Over the last few month I was testing out some of the big link selling sites. I wanted to know how much they pay you, in this case me, and how easy it is to get your links sold out.
First of all, I cut it down. I don’t like those freakin’ big postings like Eli does it, I like informations compressed into little pieces. so lets start.

At the beginning I want to reroute the German visitors to teliad.de. It’s big and it works good. The prices are not that high as on TextLinkAds but it works fine for German sites and just btw. I don’t like linklift. Don’t ask me why, i just don’t like them. rest of Europe: sorry nothing else tested. Any hints? Write it down in the comments!

My Test Sites
I tested this with two very simple sites. One is a poker blog with very good bought content like a terms glossary (”full house” etc.), descriptions about the most common types of poker and similar card games and of course a few news about poker 1:1 ripped from poker news sites. The site has around 50 very unique pages. PR4. The other site i want to sell out is a German dept consulting page. You can put you ZIP or city in the search field and you get back dept consulting offices near that point ordered by range. A nice geo search site, well indexed by Google, sorted by state and city. It also has some unique content pages like a glossary etc. We’re talking about something like 50,000 pages on that site. PR5.
Both sites are touched with sprinkles from Adsense and affiliate programs.

Lets get to the big players: LinkWorth vs. TextLinkAds

First, before we come to the highlight TLA, we’re talking a minute about linkworth.
The site looks nice, the features are getting better and the concept probably works. at the end, just not for my sites. I have them in linkworth for about four month and nothing. not one sell. not one single crappy 10 cents link.

Nothing. I played with the options, I did everything I could do but nobody wants a backlink on my sites. Probably it just happens to me and others making billions with 10 sites, I don’t know and at this point i don’t care

Because it doesn’t worked out for me.
Just while I was writing this someone wanted to place a link on my poker site. one link for $40. This probably saves linkworth from a bad rating. So i visited the “pending” links site to approve the link. On the next site after clicking approve next to the link, linkworth asked me that I have to choose how i build in the links. I selected the Wordpress plugin because its a Wordpress site and with a plugin I don’t have much to care about.

The Maintenance
After selecting the Wordpress plugin and getting the download link on the next site linkworth told me:
“www.somepokerdomain.pl Failed - Please trying again in 24 hrs” - and the link I had to approve was gone.
No love for linkworth. That’s all I have to say.

Now lets talk about TextLinkAds - Where you make the big money with crap.
TextLinksAds, yeah I like that sound. They send me so much money each month, it let Larry and Brin look like hobos.

Compared to my richness. seriously, they pay out very good.
In detail that means after the first month it doesn’t happens anything at all but from one day to another i sold out all 8 links and one RSS link on my poker blog in like a week and around 2 weeks for 6 links on the dept consulting page. 8 and 6 links are not sound like the big money. I thought. but i wasn’t aware of how much they get for a good, niche matching, unique content site backlink.

Lets Put It Into Numbers
poker - 9 links - $77
dept - 6 links - $72

That means one link on my dept page gets me $12 and one link on the poker site around $8.5.
I’m impressed. I’m sold out all my links, get nice money for doing nothing. literally nothing. The best conversion I think is the poker blog.

… and now comes the bluehat kung foo …

I just set up a wordpress blog on a nice *poker*.com domain, trackback spammed 83 visible backlinks on google, 84 on MSN and 528 visible backlinks shows the site explorer on yahoo.com. I don’t put any effort in it. I just scraped myself a small list of trackback urls and hit the ping button. costs me around 30 minutes.

Now Comes The Interesting Part
A) I figured out that many, many blogs blocking trackbacks with *poker* in the title and/or url. what meant i had to use some other similar words like “card games” or “casino”. So I’m not really good “ranked” on google with major keywords. Sure i got myself a PR4 domain in like two weeks (PR update was shortly after. HA!) but I’m only have good positions with loooong terms. That ends up in not much search engine traffic.

B) you don’t need niche relevant backlinks, probably they get you a slightly higher PR at the end but for now it just counts that you get many backlinks doesn’t care about the keyword you link because you don’t need the search engine traffic.

C) sites with a PR higher than 3 and a serps ruling niche are selling very good at TLA. $8.5 for a crappy backlink on a not really traffic making page, with a lousy PR is, i think, awesome.

That means, if you can get a good PR for a domain, themed for a big subject like poker or mortgage or loans or debts or whatever is overwhelmed by SEO optimized, backlink buying domains on every search engine, you can make nice money very fast.

Lets Take A Calculator
say we have 200 domains with the topic poker. on each we put up Wordpress, fill it with RSS news and also some bought

Content, build in the TextLinkAds for Wordpress plugin for links sidebar and the RSS feed links. Now we get a PR4 for every domain. somehow. magical.
we would earn with just 6 links in the sidebar, based on my $8.5 per link: $10,200
nice, for just setting up stupid domains, doesn’t care about your own backlinks as long as they get your site a high PR…

Just btw. If you need 30 minutes per weblog and work on it 8 hours per day you’ll need 12.5 days to set up 200 blogs. say you take a bit longer, take a month. after that month you could earn a few thousand dollars… with just keeping the PR of your weblogs stable and high as possible.

… and you know what? TLA keeps it real:

update
about linkworth: i got an e-mail from the support because of my little “problem”:
Tobias, There is actually something wrong with that advertiser account. They have money in their account but the system is not letting them use it. We have a programmer working on this and I am sure they will repurchase the ads once it is corrected. Please be patient. Thanks, Mitzi

“I CAN HAS BUCKS BUT NO LINKZ?”
still, no love for linkworth…

…and about linklift: they rewritten all the crappy code in their system (also wordpress plugins etc.) and the affiliate system is better than before. (greets to mr. linklift herforder)

Great contribution Tobsn, really enjoyed reading that - especially the “blue hat kung foo” :)

vd, PR exports are usually every 3 months and to be frank, if you aren’t prepared to wait 12 weeks for something to work, you’re never going to make any money online..

Some solid ideas to build on with this post. However, I don’t see TLA being around for too long. Google is cracking down on paid links and zapping any link strength they pass. It’s all too easy to get a list from the TLA directory of who is buying/selling links - so I think public link auction sites like this won’t be doing great business in the future.

Just don’t put all your eggs in one basket and quit your day job :)

Thanks for the post Tobsn/Eli.

Hi,

one thing I was wondering about on which you get conflicting answers: does Google penalize hosting lots of domains on one host/ip? For instance, do you need tens of accounts for your 200 blogs, or can you just run them from one account with unlimited domains, like [5] Dreamhost?

#5 Comment By Craig On July 31, 2007 @ 3:56 am

How long? Is that amount of money per month, or per year?

#6 Comment By kelvin newman On July 31, 2007 @ 5:35 am

It’s the fundamental flaw in how these services price their links, serves them right if a few people take advantage!

#7 Comment By trigatch4 On July 31, 2007 @ 5:52 am

The problem is, you’re assuming there are enough people who want to buy links on 200 blogs. You’ll be flooding the TLA market with links from poker sites and supply will far outpace demand. That’s my guess anyways.

#8 Comment By Beerhat On July 31, 2007 @ 6:34 am

Hey Tobsn, I hear you’re one hell of a programmer…so the only thing I would add to your tut is to include an alexa cheater. TLA and the other guys take alexa (and technorati I think) into consideration when deciding how much to pay you for links.

#9 Comment By chatmasta On July 31, 2007 @ 8:30 am

Yep, that’s a problem I see too.

#10 Comment By Plepco On July 31, 2007 @ 9:39 am

As far as hosting, just buy a few accounts and spread out your sites across various IPs that way. I have like four (crappy) hosting accounts that run me about $10 a year, I pay $5 or so for some hosting I bought on eBay, and I have a $70/year account with Lunarpages. I have put a bunch of sites on those accounts and it works out well.

#11 Comment By Plepco On July 31, 2007 @ 9:41 am

Buy a bunch of cheap hosting accounts at various places. You can get $10/year hosting easy. That way you can have a bunch of IPs.

I took a different path, but I like your math better. :-)

BeachBum

#14 Comment By David On July 31, 2007 @ 11:51 am

This is obviously not tested because there is no way anyone would buy links to 200 of essentially the same site. As said above, the supply would outpace the demand on TLA.

It’s great to find ways to dupicate money-making methods, and even better, automate it, but this is simply not dupe-able. And good luck pulling PR 4 on 200 domains, that seems like more than a few weeks worth of work.

Additionally if your sites are all ripped content and provide little of actual value to anyone, this technique won’t last long. You would be spending so much time coming up with new ideas and new implementations that the effect would be null.

I think there maybe something here in the idea, but the above method is probably not the best way to go about it.

#15 Comment By Eli On July 31, 2007 @ 12:44 pm

Matt cutts talked about this in his myth busters videos. Shared hosting and hosting on the same ip as sites that are banned have no affect on your site. So same IP does not hurt you….according to him.

#16 Comment By Eli On July 31, 2007 @ 12:45 pm

no mention of textlinkbrokers in here?
They sell in large packages such as 200 links across 150 subdomains with PR4-pr7. stuff like that. Many go for $500+/month.

[6] http://www.textlinkbrokers.com/inventory/sites/pagerank/4#results

Thanks for the post tobsn, this has opened up a really good discussion. Duplicable idea or not.

#17 Comment By Tobsn On July 31, 2007 @ 1:14 pm

i never said its a good idea, in any way duplicable or that my math is proofread by hawking :P

but its definitely possible and there is no way that you would outpace the demand on TLA with 200 blogs… sure, i know there are ~300 sites in the “blogs” category on TLA but you can spread your sites over all the categories… and at the end… wouldnt it be fun to rule at least 2-3% of the TLA “market”? :P

#18 Comment By screwd On July 31, 2007 @ 5:37 pm

Yea, you will flood the market and prices will god down, etc. Theres not *that* much link love to go around.

And on the subject of PR updates, I havnt seen one in a while, anyone know when last one was?

#19 Comment By screwd On July 31, 2007 @ 5:44 pm

the problem (or blessing) with most of these text link sites, is.. they do alexa really badly. Since alexa only takes 1st level domain into consideration, you are better off getting a crappy tripod or wordpress.com account. Gives you bob.wordpress.com or whatever, and that ranks alexa rank of 228 ;)
(sorry if this dupes, seems to not like my comment)

It really amazes me how small minded some people are. Tobsn great post by the way. Most of the people on here that have responded are really small minded idiots in my opinion. Everyone is looking to shoot holes in why it won’t work. Whaaaa “saturation” whaaaaa “google is cracking down” give me a break you douchebags and come up with some good ideas on how to improve on what he shared. There’s money in that thread and it’s the small minded losers that don’t see and just want to tell you why it won’t work.

Good work Tobsn keep it up!@

#22 Comment By ImagesAndWords On August 1, 2007 @ 5:32 am

I’m with smaxor here. I think the idea (or at least principle) of Tobsn’s post is great. It doesn’t mean it has to be followed literally to work. Posts like these serve as a seed for many other workable ideas and that is the point.

#23 Comment By Matt Stoddart On August 1, 2007 @ 7:45 am

Sounds like we need to get on the ball for you, bro! We outsourced the development of our WP Plugin and it’s been a bit of a headache.

As for the other LinkWorth-related concerns, I’m going to see if there’s anything I can do to change your opinion about us….just give me a little time. ;)

#24 Comment By Alex On August 1, 2007 @ 9:57 am

Very interesting idea. I’ve been looking for an easy way to monetize TLA for awhile. This could be it :)

My main holdup is how to go about getting all that trackback spam. How do you scrap all those trackback links? I’m pretty bad at finding the links the old fashioned way (manually). I’m assume you’re using wordpress - do you just basically make one post with all the trackback URLs listed in the trackback part of the post?

#25 Comment By Desty On August 1, 2007 @ 11:37 am

I have similar problems with Link Worth. Mind you my blog is getting ready to hit 3 months old near the middle / end of August. I browsed through some of the other sites available and the sear number of sites is HUGE! Hopefully things will get better after some Google PR love this month *crossing fingers*

You’re assuming, though, that there is enough ad inventory to support your 200 poker blogs. On the other hand it’s quite possible. It’s certainly a good niche for TLA. I was earning about $220-250 from one site, and was told the other 7 gambling blogs I bought could earn a total of $500-800/m once they hit PR4. Not bad, considering I don’t even gamble.

Someone mentioned it above: you do have to wait for PR recalculation, but if you start now, you’ll be okay for Oct 31st, I think. good luck

#28 Comment By tom On August 1, 2007 @ 9:51 pm

When is the fucking google update going to happen? Man, it is more than 180 days Google. wtf. I hate this waiting, it sucks. Why can’t google simply update it every 180th day?

Also PR is a flawed stupid system, which I think google is going to drop very soon. After that, a site’s importance will be decided purely based on the backlinks. May be google can drop it’s PR nonsense and start showing accurate backlinks.

#29 Comment By Alan On August 1, 2007 @ 11:06 pm

Find here the list of dates updates for PR:
[9] http://www.seocompany.ca/pagerank/page-rank-update-list.html

Dropping the PR? Yeah, right I’ve heard that since years, Google is not going to drop it soon, it might change its algorithm to calculate the PR, but even then , the PR is representing the number and values of backlinks, so even if you have many crappy backlinks, you will get a nice PR.

Remember that Google link: command only shows a sample of backlinks, so you can’t rely on that to know the importance of a website…

#30 Comment By Raven Riley Fans On August 2, 2007 @ 1:23 am

isn’t it enough to run the blogs through squirt to get enough backlinks for a good pagerank?

cause in that case you are not spamming other sites where the owners can answer with their lawyer .

#31 Comment By sp On August 2, 2007 @ 2:16 pm

@tom

haahahaha i agree man. They should update in real time. If they have so much money, they should spend some time on a better system for their webmasters that make them the money by giving them websites to index. for example, make the spidering a little better. However, they give us things like analytics for free, which is sweet.

From my experience, pagerank means squat.

#32 Comment By Seb On August 5, 2007 @ 3:26 am

But anyway, if you are selling 200 links or less, it is more or less money for doing nothing. So its ok! Setting up a blog is so easy. I even have got one site with a PR3 and that only comes from links from ONE bookmark site.

#33 Comment By Mark On August 5, 2007 @ 9:14 pm

Great post Tobsn,

I have been doing this for awhile now and it does work.

Trackbacks did not work, as they were deindexed too fast. But posting just a few comments in the nofollow crowd did (-:

Also add a few youtube videos to make the pages a little bit sticky. When they are evaluating your site, and how much they pay, the sites with the videos sell faster.

Thanks again for making me want to bang out another 250 domains this week.

As for the inventory part, just do not submit them all to one company at the same time, stagger them out.

This is not a fast cash system, but makes very good $$$ every month.

I’m a big Linkworth fan, but I have to admit it took me quite a while to get some links sold and make some good money. Now I’m up to almost 2k a month. I like them because of that and also that they are a good company for the most part. I have exchanged emails with some of the management including the CEO.

There are a few warts to be sure, but if you have good sites (PR, Alexa, and traffic) then you can sell links if they are priced right. On my biggest site, a directory about 3+ years old, PR4, 11k hand-edited listings, I have some links that pay $149 a month! What I do with all my sites is start out fairly low and get some links. $5 is $5 and better than nothing. Then when I get 3-4 links I start raising my prices, since I don’t want too many links swarming the page. The idea was to slow down the link requests, the effect was to start making much more per link. If I start losing links, I lower the price again.

But the best thing about LinkWorth is that they only take 30% of the fees. Look at what others take and some are up to 50% of the “wholesale” price, which is a total ripoff IMO. If LinkWorth places links for you they do charge 50% (retail), but for some people that is worth it to have them spend the time on it.
LinkWorth.com baby, and I AM an affiliate who doesn’t mind using a non-affiliate link…

#39 Comment By preved On August 29, 2007 @ 6:39 pm

200 blogs…wow.
I guess there’s a better method to monetize them. Let’s say you have 200 blogs in one niche - why not to advertise your own sites and your own affiliate programs on their pages? let’s do some calculation - let’s each blog have 5 visitors a day. there are 1000 visitors a day in total. And all of that blogs are linking to target site which have a good position in serps (so let’s add 20-200 visitors more). let’s say you have some context gambling ads and ctr about 15%. 1200/100*15=180 clicks a day. each gambling’s click is about $2-3. 180*$2*30 days=$10800. and that’a a bad method of monetizing because the better way is to send visitors directly to gambling aff. programs - the total profit per user will be much-much greater than 2-3 bucks.
Constantly add the fresh content, dont’t wait for the PR update, get the new visitors to the new pages of your blog empire…and buy new BMW every year.
Sound good but the true is you should choose the less competitive niche than gambling and working with 200 blogs is as hard as hell.

And sure later you can put on your blogs TLA :)

#40 Comment By Jay On September 13, 2007 @ 11:01 pm

My humble opinion is that TLA isn’t worth giving them money. They have huge commission and the links are sold sitewide at once. Selling links on separate pages with services like [11] can give more money. The links will be cheap, but you can sell every page of the website separately. Selling many links can turn out to be a more stable and predictable business than selling a few. If you understand such things:)

So In a way This actually might just serve them right. ;)

Thanks for this post Tobsn. I have always wanted to try TextLinkAds but was unable to find a real review until now. I wanted to know how much they pay per link, sounds like you need at least a PR4 to get rolling with them. Anyhow your figures sound very encouraging. I have one questions if you happen to come back and check this post - Are the links they purchase for $8.5 monthly, yearly, or permanent?

Link seller have been penalized. It´s a good thing.

#83 Comment By Gambling On August 15, 2009 @ 2:09 pm

In despite of Google penalties there are out there websites investing big money in links every month. For a skilled webmaster in the art of building PR, a chain of websites or blogs could bring very good money. I know some guys on vacation because they have sold their website space to the big boys.

I know I’ve got a late start on this but after spending the most of today on the project I now have a script crawling several websites for blog titles. I’m up to about 30,000 titles just from the last few hours. I also have coded the rss feed generator, and the keyword organizer so that I can target specific products for the keywords. What do you think is a good amount of titles to be working with that will make this worth while?

Also, am I correct when saying that we are relying on the spammers to link back to our “fake blogs” for this to all work? Is that really a safe bet? Do the spammers actually include our links?

PR exports are usually every 3 months and to be frank, if you aren’t prepared to wait 12 weeks for something to work, you’re never going to make any money online..

I feel that Google is definately cracking down on paid links tho cutting out all their value so not sure how long that is going to last.
