It really isn’t that difficult to write your own unique articles. Sometimes I even use speech to text software such as dragon naturallyspeaking or even microsoft’s products to speak what you want to say and edit it later. It’s a sure way of getting unique content and it usually turns out well.

If #10 achieved, then you have two options. White-hat lazy-ass marketer’s way - develop your blog and wait until someone clicks the link in the article, visit your blog and buy smth, i.e. article – blog – commission. Or, white-hat lazy-ass marketer’s way #2 . Redirect your blog to affiliate link. You skip the ‘- blog -’ part. Obviously, article will be deleted one day.

Keep up the good work, at least youre giving out tips that worth something, not same old chewed out stories everyone can write after spending a month in seo biz.

Can I ask what software you are using for your own directories?? You running blog network plugins or propper AD software?

Eli, you mention using up to 5k targets for article submits. What sort of tool do use for this? It’s a hole I need to fill in my system and I’m not really sure how to start attacking it. I can’t see article submissions sites being generic enough to handle automated form submission unless you’ve painstakingly built bots for each one?

I understand and agree with the match and exceed part. But isn’t the whole point of writing good unique articles with authority to have them placed on other sites and link back to your site? Or are you saying keep your good articles on your site and let “others” link to your articles? I guess the latter is a win win situation the more I think about it. But that means your article would have to be indexed and be found quickly for others to link to. Am I following you correctly?

Yeah, I use a similar technique. Even just slightly altering your older articles to suit a new site isn’t that difficult.

I do use article sites myself sometimes. I keep the best content for my clients sites and submit the boring stuff to article directories. I never use mass submission or anything though, I look for the better directories and I do 1 unique article, per article site.

It is not that hard to make an original article, is it? If it is not, try writing an article that has a 75% - 85% original content. You may have similar ideas from one or two or more articles, at least you exceeded them, right?

For a new website, I find the effective way to get organic traffic is article submission.

How can we do if we don’t submit articles to article directories when we choose article marketing as a main trategy. Actually there are some article marketing tools can help writing unique articles and submitting to article directories.

I think, concerning article submission, you should provide genuine writings. Their are laws pertaining to copyrighted writings, so, blogger should be sensitive of that. Yeah, online business is tough but I guess, making genuine writings is better. Trying to duplicate some writings could cause a problem. We should be ethical on that! To all who don’t understand this post. What happens is that you spend time and writing a 100% unique article and submit to a site. Your competitors will steal and spin it and resubmit it on the same site with their links, making your article’s value drop. So why do it?

Put the unique article on your own website or some place else. Doesn’t mean that a competitor won’t steal it also. Happens to me all the time.

His point is that if you are going to put an article out there why make it unique, it will get duplicated 100x within a year.

What article directories are you submitting to? When you mass submit, most of those directories don’t even review the content before it is accepted, the only directories you have to worry about getting your hand slapped from are EZA, Buzzle, etc - not the ones that are typically used for mass distribution.

Lo and behold I was just trawling the serps and I found someone’s site totally outranked by their own ezine articles for their prime keywords. Not only that, but they are spending their time building someone else’s real estate! Congratulating yourself on your ezine article is like congratulating yourself on the $10 you put in the bank, all the while oblivious that the guy owning the bank is the real winner, they have thousands of people effectively working for them, building their asset power which they then use to put an even bigger gap between them and you, all the while they offer little parcels of opportunity that help you a bit but help them even more. Asset control seems like its just as much a business axiom online as offline.
There are plenty of ways to score links on authority domains without having to donate a page of content to their cause.

Duplicate content is a massive no no, stealing other peoples work is lame and can really affect your rankings. Its not hard to write unique content, especially if you believe in your words. You can register your content through copyscape I think. So YOUR words are your own and only you have rights to them.

One must have a unique content before submitting to thousands of free articles out there that have even set to dofollow on their links attributes.

The fact that Google will rank a page about whatever topic from EzineArticles highly is one thing but why do you believe that the links from the article submission pages back to your site are followed/valued by Google, they were obviously submitted by the site owner, why on earth would Google count such a link, wether it is nofollow or dofollow is irrelevant.

By creating these articles, be they original, spun or copied you are just increasing the page count of another site - which merrily adds it’s own advertising, you make nothing and get no link value - article marketing is a fools errand.

You can write the most wonderful article, submit it to Ezine, watch it rank and get zero link benefit - unless of course people actually click on the link, in terms of linkvalue it is a waste of time.

Also if you submit an original article to a article site it will generally rank, but additional submissions of the same article seldom rank, it is a waste of time, the same is true of spun articles in my experience.

Your ideas sound fine until they are read through and examined, they then sound very amateurish.

It is actually not true. You do not get any duplicate content penalty for submitting an article that is published on your website to article directories. Some may not publish it since it is not unique, but that’s the worst that will happen. Duplicate content penalties only come into play when you post the same thing on your website multiple times. When you submit a single article to multiple directories, that is called syndication and you do not get any penalties for that. Google will not let you go hurt your competition by simply distributing their articles to as many article directories as possible. If you leave their link in the article, you’re just doing them a favor. And to claim their article as your own is breaking copyright laws. There are some harsh penalties if your competition really takes it personally and does something about it.

That would be the most figuratively motivated post I have ever seen in my entire life.

I know you mentioned that you don’t worry too much about IP addresses, but you do worry about whois info. What do you do? Set the registrant to be a fake person? Do you use a real address? One where you will get the mail? Do you use multiple registrars or just use the cheapest. (Or even the easiest to use! - Buying lots of domains can be time consuming with the wrong registrar.)

Article submission have never been a part of my linking strategy because i don’t like thinking up and writing up an article only to have it rank higher for the keywords than my site. Since i can use the competitors articles, that has now stopped my excuses lol.

I know for a fact that you can submit a quadrillion dupe articles to a quadrillion sites and none of the articles will ever get viewed by anyone.. even if if goes through and it goes live.

I think your site offers a variety of useful information but stealing competitors articles is a little risky. As soon as private companies find a way of proving ownership, the potential profits from suing individuals for copyright infringements would be huge. The old trick of sending yourself a parcel, through the post, with your content in is available online. Secure server deposits where the item can not be modified (not even by the moderators) are available. Whether this could prove ownership I don’t know but is something to be aware of.

I think we’ve got to accept that this sort of thing goes on, and if others are doing it, you’ve got to come to the mature decision about whether you should do it as well. I think there are definitely circumstances when it’s OK, but you have to look at the bigger picture.

Making an article/ writings should be done genuinely. Nowadays, you can’t just do copy with others’ work because we are now protected with copyright laws and we should not take for granted this one. I say submit articles. If there is not much competition that it really is not a “must” but it’s a great tool to distribute your content and get traffic to your site.
It is time consuming, that is why it’s better to outsource your work but as for never? I think it’s always good to distribute your original content anywhere for traffic.

Links from article directories are much better since Google treat those sites with more “respect” and there for your link has more value coming from article sites.

I would prefer to do the optimization of my site slowly but surely and safely. The penalty can led to banning of your site in giant search engines so why take the risk?

sounds really tiring and exhausting doing this kind of stuff. submitting it to a hundred of article sites doesn’t even mean one article only. you need to rewrite it and rewrite it over and over again and I don’t know if that is really worth the effort.

I don’t think there is a thing like good unique content anymore. If you write a good post, it is 90% sure that very soon you will see it somewhere else and if your site is new or with no ranking and so on, you are in trouble. Once in a while I will do some article submissions, but I mainly write my own content and hope for the best. You brought up quite a bit to think about when it comes to using articles and it is extremely competitive in all the article directories. Not to mention, some article directories may never get around to posting your articles, which I’ve had happen to me.

Yeah, and there is a fairly large problem with strategies like ” Submit Your Competitors Articles” Aside from being black-hat, the domain owner could be sued for copyright infringement. You might have it set to private, but that doesn’t protect you from the law.

I found your site sometime ago and thoroughly enjoyed the SEO Empire Part I post. However, speaking honestly it has taken some time for it to sink in and get a better understanding of what you were saying. I realize that was 3 years ago now and I’ve a few questions.

1) How broad a topic for the foundation sites would you recommend?

How generic or how specific should the site be? If it is too general, then I am wondering if that would be a problem, but if the site’s topic was TOO specific, I am not sure how possible it would be to get so many pages indexed/content created easily. I guess an example would be a foundation site on the topic COMPUTER versus a foundation site on the topic COMPUTER GAMES. I think the COMPUTER GAMES would be better because the content would be more specific which would help drive up a money page if I created one based or related to computer games in someway.

2) What’s the best way to make “content”?

Obviously there’s no easy answer to this question, and if there is I doubt, and don’t blame, people for not wanting to share. I see you recommended database driven sites, but the content appeared to be very “static”. I am not sure if that has changed in the 3 years since you made that post. I am wondering if it is best to buy PLR and just spin the content. Obviously this could turn out to be very time consuming, but I am not sure how else you could get semi useful content that doesn’t look like you’ve chopped it up with an online translating program that spits out useless garbage.

Either way I want to say a huge thanks. One of the biggest stumbling blocks I’ve noticed is that launching a site is easy, it is actually getting the links to it. The thought of making a landing page and then building up the link sites or web 2.0 sites for that specific topic EVERY TIME I make a new money site seems a huge waste of time. I am not saying this shouldn’t be done, but you’ve answered a nagging question in my brain which was HOW can I get semi relevant or at least an injection of links to help push up a new site and then work on get relevant/more specific links etc. I think the only way to answer my question is to TRY, and build up what I consider to be a foundation site. Thought I’d see if you had any other tips before I start. If not, no problem. I have enjoyed reading your stie and will continue reading. Happy New Year.

I say if you have the time and effort for it do it. It can never do any harm to your site and can always help you in the future rank better, since you never know when more people will promote your niche and there will be competition. Better being safe than sorry IMO.

First, thanks for the excellent posts. I found your site several years ago, but it’s taken all this time for things to even start to make sense. I am a long way from really “knowing” the ins and outs of everything you’ve posted here, so I have a few questions to ask.

1) Foundation sites - Still effective?

I think this is something I do finally get. There’s many sites that “somehow” have 40k back links, and while I am sure many of them are legit, it makes sense that they use networks to get these links. Since the original post was in 2007, I am curious if you’ve had to make any “changes” to your sites, or have you seen them losing “link power”? Getting a network of sites is something I see as a must. The links may not all be high PR or from unique IPs, but I can see how useful they are. One thing that turns me off from launching a new website, regardless of how small the niche/competition is, is that the amount of work required to get links. You called it “building from the top down”, and it’s the reason why I think network sites are great. Have you see the “power” of these foundation sites drop over the years?

2) Building foundation sites and their “market”

This question relates to the first. What’s the best way for someone who currently lacks the knowledge to use databases and SQL to build one and how market specific should they be for best results? I’ve had my best success building web 2.0 sites with spun content (unique article I write that I spin several times for multiple platforms), but the problem again is that this is a lot of work. I’ve nothing against working hard, but if you launch ten sites, it means building from the “top down” 10 times over. I want to make my life easier in the long run, not harder.

I guess the only thing I should do is just try, but thought I’d ask anyway. My current way of launching a new site is how I believe 99% of others do it. Build the money page, then build up the supporting network specific to that landing page niche (profile links, articles and web 2.0). It works, but its short-term and very niche specific. Your notion of “real estate” is what finally clicked with me. I am just trying to make sure that the time required I spend building my real estate is at least half right.

I’ve never really thought about article submissions as hurting you - very interesting and contrary to what I was taught about SEO early on. You do make some valid arguments.

I have however, seen great rankings increases from article submissions however. AND, I always submit old content that is already on my site.

Your idea of Match and Exceed is a great one! That’s the only real strategy that works in SEO.

For a new website, I find the effective way to get organic traffic is article submission.

What a strategy you had there. I am now thinking to use the same technique, but what comes in my mind is that do we need to step on other people to be on the top? I think in making some decisions we should try to consider our values. We should try to consider what is ethical and unethical. SEO = work and opportunities

Okay, there are a few problems with this technique. First, stealing other people’s articles is a violation of copyright law. It’s a good way to get yourself in trouble.

Second, Matt Cutts at Google says there is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty. Duplicate content just gets filtered out of the search results. In all cases they try to just show the original source.

Third, Google has stated that it tries to keep algorithms free of loopholes competitors can exploit to tank other people’s rankings. So you can’t actually tank somebody’s rankings or give them a duplicate content penalty (which doesn’t exist) by doing this!

This is a half baked idea at best. Writing your own article, shaking it, and putting that out to the masses is a better variant. Your way saves ten bucks and leaves you very open to google updates.

@ Aron the speak to text software is a great approach to creating a great article. i find it easy to also video record yourself and watch your body language, this helps to allow yourself to make a stronger approach when it comes out in a written article. Or are you saying keep your good articles on your site and let “others” link to your articles? I guess the latter is a win win situation the more I think about it. Amongst all the spam comments … I am going to ask a real question. Being a dog walker and coming from Australia. I have a niche and maybe because of the .au site suffix, no direct competition with the article sites? That is, hoping the US article sites send traffic, and my own site in Aus ranks high enough in Google (when people just search for Aus sites) to rate higher than the article sites.

On other client sites I have submitted 100% original articles that are on their sites to the article sites, without spinning. DO YOU KNOW if there is a penalty for this duplicate content for this fairly low number of site submissions?

To get around this, is it worth spinning articles, or only posting half the original article on the article sites?

Besides blog commenting like on your site, article site submission is still listed by most seo guru sources as the way to go … what else is there???

I am probably a bit old-fashioned. I always write my own articles and write the things I believe is important to write about. Now, I might not get the best amount of visitors this way, but it feels good to be able to 100% know that I wrote it and I believe it is rewarding over time.

It also feels that this is something that can be given penalty for, as Bruce writes in his question. It might not be now, but it might over time.

This way of thinking has helped me quite a lot. I am no 1 on some good words on Google and jumped from 55th to 15th place on another really important word after Google changed the algorithm recently.

It is important to understand that my site is only a few months old as well.

My site is very new too. And I write all of my own articles, but because I either research expert articles on other sites (providing reference to them), or analyse Google data and create reports on a specific industry. I do this rather than just claiming my musings as a 500 word ‘article’. This means my articles often take days to perfect, rather than one or two hours, like some OS churn factories.

While I appreciate that this is doing the ‘right thing’ the length of time I take to make the article means that competitors can put up ten non-sense articles in the same time. Funnily enough I have found my emotive articles (easy to write), such as when discussing diseases related to gluten free are published, they score many more reads that pure research and state of the market articles. I appreciate the ‘give the people what they want’ theory, but it just may be that article site cruisers are just looking for a ‘good read’ or to pillage your article, where as the wider google search community may appreciate original research and trend reporting more? This seems to be the case when i check analytics.

Frustrating that it is, I am just looking at a way of not dumbing down my articles, and still be able to leverage them (maybe that does mean spinning them)?

As a by the way, i submit the articles to get people interested in the full story to visit my site and maybe provide one way links if they like what they find. the article sites are not about raw visitor numbers.

I have been doing article submissions and it did give me good results. but when I tried to use newer ways to increase traffic and convert those traffic I got into sales, it made a big difference. I used advancedwebads’s flat fee service of unlimited banner impressions and click monthly.

Whowwwww! its very much great article, after reading your article i think about this point. most of them thing that we can get more visitors from this sites but they never consider about competition, surely it will come one big competition of our websites.

I fully agree with you on this one. This is business and sometimes you have to get down and dirty. It is all just a big game to see who wins. The funny thing about it is most who know whats up and are able to rank probably all know each other, they just don’t realize they are opposite sides of the fence.

Honestly I never steal articles of my competitors when doing article submission. I always write my own 100% unique articles and spin and submit them to numerous article directories.

I think using the best and unique content is of great importance. Good for seo and for whatever reputation you are trying to build. You can use existing work on the web as a reference but you must make something original or useful (duplicates aren’t useful).

If you ask me, then you should always write unique articles, not that you need to write them all from ground everytime, but change something in them always, as else it’s just dulicate content, and google places lots of them lower, but if you only do it for backlinks, then it of course don’t matter all that much…

All my articles keep getting rebuffed by Ezine etc. Out of 10 I have written only 3 ever got published. Terrible.

Nice tips, That resource is the most valuable thing about your article submissions, so it should definitely be used wisely. And as far as thick paragraphs go, it’s best to keep them short. Who wants to read long mashed-up paragraph on the the web? I know I don’t. I usually don’t even bother to try once I see this.

At the end of the day, business is business. If you need to muscle your way to push past the competition then to a point it is fair game. Most people, who publish articles, write on blogs and forums are generally after the same thing. Getting links back to their site or building up their online presence.

It is amazing how many friend I have that want a the small business website designed, but do not put any effort in marketing and SEO. I think now its not time to submit one article into many article directories but its good to make solid content and add it into some most valuable directories like goarticles, articledashboard.

In my opinion the unique articles and post beside of the backlinks are the most powerfull SEO tools you can use to pull your site on the first pages of google search. It doesnt take too long to create the new article and if you are running a niche site you dont need them a lot. Like 6 to 10 articles per site is enough.

Just to help out Laminat, I have found that article submission works for SEO. To be honest, I still do it, even after the Panda nuke. It depends on the niche of course though. I just write a few good articles now and again. They tend to get syndicated, so I get a few extra links from that (from related sites).

With that said, if you don’t like writing, then don’t bother. It will show.

Whether or not it’s a case of “if you can’t beat them, join them”, it is still unethical to steal other people’s content. There’s no way around that.

This can go all the way up to a worse case scenario. Last year when Acai Berry was a hot niche a lot of people were seoing for the term and many did article distributions. While their sites never made it into the top 10, the articles they submitted came closer

i am confused why would people submit articles that are already on their site. i always try to write an article that supports what i have on my site and then point the submitted article to the one on my site. making my content the authority. and event he articles i submit are slightly different fro each site, this way there is no duplicate content issues anywhere.

There should be restriction type software in article directories that could recognize the steal content before accepting it for the approval in the directories. Otherwise it is impossible to stop the spammers from the spamming.

Although I think that you defended yourself quite well, I still tend to agree with rania. “Stealing” your competitor’s content is never acceptable. If you want to make money with your website or generate traffic, then the only ethic way is to make sure that your website actually stands out. Standing out doesn’t mean copying, it means creating something unique. How can copying something be unique? To answer my own question: it can’t be. Too all bloggers, webmasters, please create your own content and refrain from copying. It might take you a bit longer to achieve what you want, but you’ll get there.

This is a very interesting article. I just started my blog a few months ago and one of the first things the so called “experts” tell you to do is submit articles to directories. I’ve submitted a few but i’m more focused on building content. For my article submissions I sometimes will write someting small 200-400 words and post that. Thanks for the post.

yes so many panda and penguin update came to remove all the spamy work from the search results, they have also given penalty to the websites,so now need to work very smartly and no spam work should be done, I want to give some tips now after this all updates we need to work mostly geo targeting based, have to be very clear and concern to the content of the website and also have to take care that all the information must be cleared.

While I can kinda agree with what you’re saying, if you literally rip off your competitor’s content and they come after you (perhaps forcing you to remove or change content) then you’re screwed. All your juice and backlinks from the article directories are gone.

The key thing to do is, while there are some directories that do strip external links at will, is to find the best directories that are more fair with their article moderation and stick to them. Become established on the better websites.

And if you have to change stolen content for an article submission, you might as well take your time to write something original yourself. Other articles should be used for inspiration or for an idea on a popular topic. With most article directories having a minimum of 350-400 words, it doesn’t take too long to write an original piece of work.

surely I would have to say that this is the only post concerning SEO that I have come across, telling this technique of stealing the competitors articles to harm him:) But the tip about not to submit you blog article to article directories, unless really required is a really good suggestion and definitely saved me some good articles, I was thinking about submitting.
