A low bandwidth solution to this with nice replicablility is a results code snippet from a “personality quizz” of sorts. No need to use your own bandwidth, try snagging some from another source like have the quizz predict their “top 3 vaction spots they never new existed” and have it linked up to google earth.

Similarly do some lipstick on a pig and snag one of the 5 million “top list” rss feeds on the net, slap some CSS on it, your link and let it fly (like a pig with lipstick).

Again get one of the 5 thousand free chat room boxes out their, and rap it up in CSS bacon, add theme (”saved yourself from drunk dialing; talk drunk to us instead”) and spread the word.

The images trick works really well. I’ve had good success with this targeting people who want stuff for their forum sigs.

Once each subdirectory or subpage gets enough links to it, cycle it out and let the links go to a site that needs em. You can also put the media up on another subdirectory to be used again in gathering more links.

Or, even easier… URL rewrite the image url to a php file that does a 301 header redirect, and you can not only swap the file on the fly by changing a single variable, but you can also add logic in.

For instance (simple case):

Easy as changing the url you want to redirect to.

OR… you can get fancy and use dates to schedule changes on a certain day (like when your new site is launching) or to change the redirect, say, every 2 weeks to add juice to different parts of your sites.

Sky’s the limit there.

FWIW, you need the “TRUE, 301″ part so it doesn’t do the standard 302 that the header command does by default.

I guess the real challenge is how do you know a particular image is going to have mass appeal and even if you do, how to you get that image to rank well on Google Images?

Eli, thats a great example. I have done this before VERY effectively. In a three months time using a MySpace resource site, I went from zero to 60,000 back links. Site jump to a PR 4 in a months and now is predicted to go to PR 7 in the next update (how close the prediction is i dont know, but its fun to think of!). A little bit of PHP and you could really push some traffic around. Currently building another site with an aim of 250,000 back links.

Link baiting is an important process in building natural inbound links. Lets not talk about quality but at least 80% of the time, the links coming in are relatively related to the bait. Writing of articles or posting of unique pictures (like above) are some methods which draw the links in. Depends on your industry or niche, have something that is rare or unique.

Classic viral technique. So many applications and spins off of this… pay attention to this one! It’s easy and if you get it right it could create some snowball traffic. Watch the bandwidth tho…. if you have several images you can always host them in different places and spread the load.

People don’t necessarily just grab the image. A lot of people are looking for stuff they can just drop into a social network profile… and if you give them a “code box” and say “copy and paste this”, a lot of people will just do it rather than code up their own tag / host the image. Make it easier for them to do it your way, of course a few will dump your link but if you’re getting 10,000 who cares if you lose 1,000?

Just had an idea for a spin on this.

You said that the links could go anywhere… would it be possible to build a script that auto-changes the links in the “grab code” box on your web site. You could then rotate those links to cover the inner pages of a big site, and then over time you could make sure that you get deep links to all those pages, with other people basically building them for you. Possible way to get many more of your pages indexed?

I like it that Google etc. will never actually know whether an image actually relates to the alt tag etc. So I could select any cool images and name them based on my websites keywords.
